Scot Hafer Mrs. Rue 10-8-15 Good citizen essay Understanding and Adapting People can't always get what they wants. No one can ever always get what they one in this world. Just like a society won't be able to get perfect expectations out of the people in it. A good citizen is a person who fights for racial equality and has respect for a persons culture or beliefs by giving people a place in society or by giving other races a chance in a society because if one person in a society didn't obey the law or let other races be equal to each other; then they would set bad examples to other citizens, and some people in that society might follow which would give the lawmakers and people who…
Love is Caustic: A Look into the Similarities and Differences of Laustic and Bisclavret Throughout Marie de France’s many lais, she focuses on the many facets of human nature, such as who can be trusted, who will act accordingly to their rank and status in the court, who will be honorable and treat others with respect, and most importantly, who is most deserving of the love of another. By the very definition of the lais, being a love ballad of sorts, this is nothing surprising. What is far more shocking about the works of Marie de France is that she holds nothing back when it comes to the repercussions that her characters experience for their actions. The idea that love can nurture and help one grow is noted by Marie, but the opposite being…

At the beginning of the poem the Author says, “Traveler, your foot steps are the road, and nothing more (Machado 1)”. Machado is describing the road that people has to make.…
We The People By: Alivia Huberty, Meica Wyatt, Marina Burpee (Alivia) James Madison once said “The latent causes of factions are thus sown in the nature of man.” This means factions are inevitable, they are a part of life. The founders believed that the weaknesses of factions could be prevented by controlling the effects of the factions.…
Sheridan Le Fanu’s novella Carmilla, published in 1872 is a vampire story that exemplifies elements of female sexuality and of Gothic vampirism. Vampire fiction in English literature often embodies the fears of a society. The Victorian Era was not as accepting of female sexuality or, even more fearsome, homosexuality. It was common for vampire stories during this era to reflect upon these fears in society. The story of Carmilla was seen as a definitive tale that portrayed the unthinkable, meaning it went against the strict Victorian society.…

In “Behind the Beautiful Forevers” Katherine Boo argues that societies are becoming corrupt because of capitalism’s prevalence in modern societies. Capitalism is creating an economy where products and profits are owned by companies and individuals instead of the government. ("Capitalism" Merriam Webster) Having profits owned by individuals drive owners to create inequitable systems that take advantage of lower class citizens. The systems drive the lower class to compete against one another to create a small profit, that will soon be taken away by the individuals or companies that “own” the profit created by the system.…
The poem Totally Like Whatever, You Know? by Taylor Mali is about today’s teenagers speaking mannerisms. It’s also about what he thinks it makes them sound like. He thinks that it makes them sound like they don’t care. Some examples from the poem are that they’re are putting question marks at the the end of statements that aren’t questions, and and are ending sentences with like “right?”…
This poem “Status Quo” by Binga Dismond was about the jim crow law and the status quo. The mood furthermore the tone of this poem was very dark and helpless. I felt powerless when I read “A mere short span--they can decide” because the speaker pronounced it as if they had no say and gave up to let the enemies decide everything. They used dark and gory words to set the mood such as rust, die, dust, and vestige.…
My final reason for my grading of this book is the unique wording to help build the story. The author of this story beautifully executed a rather sad story however in doing this she also of course conveys her message “I close my eyes and let the darkness grow and spread until it morphs from a feeling of sadness into something worse: a memory, a flashback (Hawkins 12).” This descriptive writing is not for everyone but I really do enjoy reading it. Which to me really makes Paula Hawkins a very adroit author.…
The Quiet Character: A Force to Be Reckoned With As I was reading This One Summer, I was fascinated with how both the author and illustrator created, and defined each of the characters in their own way. Mariko Tamaki seems to put less focus on certain characters. At the same time Jillian Tamaki creates strong visual imagery on those same characters. Specifically speaking, why does Mariko Tamaki put less focus on Evelyn's character, yet Jillian Tamaki portrays her with such strong imagery?…
