Acute Renal Injury is when kidney function decreases, and a build up of waste products occurs. Lab values that can indicate ARI include BUN and creatnine. There are three major conditions that can cause acute renal failure (ARF) and they are divided into three major categories: pre-renal failure, intrarenal failure, and post renal failure. Prerenal failure is caused by hypoperfusion of the kidneys. Situations that can cause hypoperfusion include: hemorrhage, vomiting, diarrhea, impaired cardiac efficiency, MI sepsis, anaphylaxis. Due to decreased perfusion, the glomerulus is not able to filter waster products. If prerenal failure is not corrected in time, it can progress to intrarenal failure.

Intrarenal failure is caused by disease processes
