Studies focusing on the cognitive symptoms of children with ADEM are very few. Different studies have shown that attention deficit disorder seems to be prevalent in children who recover from ADEM, stating 5 of 33 children had developed ADD once fully recovered from ADEM. However, the development of attention deficit disorder is higher in children with who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis than children who recovered from ADEM. Surprisingly, cognitive impairment tends to be more at risk than the physical symptoms, affecting planning and impulses. Another study found that children, who were diagnosed with ADEM before five years old, were more susceptible to cognitive dysfunction than other children.
