Acute Care Reflection

This whole clinical experience has given me great insight into child health and the variety of nursing roles that exist in both acute care and community. At the beginning of the semester, our lecture focused strongly on growth and development, specifically the milestones at each stage of life (infants, toddlers, preschoolers etc.). This was very helpful when it came to working with the children at Piitoayis Family School, as there was great diversity in growth and development amongst all these children. Some of them were not reading at grade level or behaving in ways that would be appropriate for their age, whereas others were right on track. I believe by learning the “norms” for growth and development, it made it easier for us to recognize …show more content…
The children at Piitoayis seemed more accepting and open to building a relationship right off the bat, where I noticed the children were more cautious in the acute setting. I believe this stems from vulnerability, as they are sick and not somewhere where they may not necessarily feel comfortable (like being at home or being around their friends). Safety was another topic that was emphasized in our lecture. For community, we spoke in regards to school safety (by having a locked school, checking in & out at office and before getting on the school bus, and daily routine) and for acute, we focused on physical/health safety (constant supervision, emergency supply checks, IV checks every hour, vital signs every 4 hours, triple checks for dosage calculations). All of these are so important and must be held at a very high standard in all settings. I found the experience at Piitoayis very insightful, as many of these children come from marginalized families with very different background

On Wednesday, October 7, 2015 I eagerly went to my first Pediatric clinical site. I was nervous as always, but once I entered the Meyer site I realize I was more so in a delightful heaven. I always had a special place in my heart for children with special needs or any congenital anomalies. So to see the kids and how they interact with one another as well as how "normal" they were with their learning abilities. No children received medication during my clinical visit, although a few was said to receive medication by their parents in the morning or before bedtime.…

From midterm to current my CI allowed me to handle more of her caseload, observe online documentation, and weekly progress reports on her patients. She encouraged questions, and thoroughly explained why certain treatments and activities were better than others. She allowed for open communication of patient interventions, which made me feel comfortable enough to take on more of her case load and contributed to my visual, and hands on style of learning. From my initial visit to current my CI has ensured my environment promotes growth at my clinical site.…

The experience of talking to different people at Roosevelt has given me a window into the lives of all these different groups. I also worked with underserved communities while volunteering abroad in Israel. At Alyn Children’s Hospital, over half the children lived under the poverty line. At the hospital there were Arab and Jewish children, many of whom lived on government aid. In addition to medical help, these children needed other types of support from the hospital staff.…

Reflection is an opportunity to learn from our mistakes, improve our practice and knowledge, and to also recognise the positives from an experience. If we don’t use reflection, we will never understand reasons why we do certain things or never be able to improve on previous experiences for the future. Reflection is essential in a care setting as situations are always arising, and we need to make sure we work to the best of our ability. This essay will be discussing the importance of reflection within personal and professional development and also the role of reflection in the provision of quality care within a care setting. This particular essay will involve the values and principles of the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) and also a thoroughly…

This experience made me realize that if I do not educate myself professionally in child life, then I will not even be able to support the people closest to me. After this experience, I became more passionate about providing support for children and families in difficult situations, especially the hospital setting. I believe that children’s development and learning should be supported and encouraged regardless of situation, culture, race, religion, gender, age, and socioeconomic status. Child life…

It is this passion and commitment to providing high-quality health care within the community that fuels my aspiration and desire to become a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) within a community health setting. While I love being a nurse and all that it encompasses, I believe that in the role of a PNP, I will have an even greater opportunity to teach, serve, and treat children and their families within the communities in which they live. In this role, I look forward to truly getting to know the patient as a whole, as well as working on a closer level with both them and their families to implement primary prevention strategies aimed to keep children out of hospitals whenever possible. I have learned throughout the clinical rotations I experienced and even more so through my current job in a clinic, that educating patients and their…

Over the past semester I have learned a great deal from the clinical experiences I have encountered at East Pavilion and on the Sentara Norfolk General Rehabilitation floor. Through these humbling experiences, I have gained a new appreciation for the ability to perform simple day to day tasks such as bathing, dressing, and even walking on my own. These tasks I often take for granted and forget that what I consider a simple task may be a difficult or painful chore for others. As I reflect on my experiences, I have identified some similarities and differences in the experiences at both facilities.…

This essay is a reflection on my anticipated health care practice. It was required that I choose a group that was effected by the diversity of ethnicities, religions, genders, sexualities and abilities in the Australian population. I chose to do a mental disability, which was dementia. Four components will be addressed into this essay; the barriers to health care access and good care, my attitude, values and beliefs towards those with dementia, culturally safe health care practices that I might undertake with Individuals with dementia, and how I, as a health care provider could advocate for people with dementia at a population level. I noticed that people with dementia suffer from multiple barriers to health care access and good care.…

Reflection About Classroom Teaching Experience Being an educator is a challenge and a new learning experience each time. As an educator, I am entrusted with the responsibility of shaping the way students think and feel in the classroom. I have always wanted to be an educator and share my experiences with the new generation of nurses. When I was assigned to work with professor Lynette Rayman to do my classroom teaching experience, I was thrilled because the topic I chose was chronic kidney disease which also happens to be my area of expertise. I had to incorporate my previous learning experiences to make my presentation lively.…
