Acute care is a level of health care in which a patient is treated for a brief but severe episode of illness, for conditions that are the result of disease, trauma or during recovery from surgery. Acute care is generally provided in a hospital by a variety of clinical personnel using technical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and medical supplies.(Sparks health system, 2015) This essay will provide a brief description of a patient Ms. Pie (pseudonym) I cared for during my acute clinical placement. It will include some background around the reasons and the events leading up to her admission, it also discusses the psychosocial impact of the acute disorder on patient and family/whanau, additional it will identify one item from the client’s pre-operative check list and explain the rationale as to, why it is important to include this item on the pre-operative checklist. Finally it will identify two potential post-operative complications client might be at risk from while describing the assessment tool/s used and list what nursing interventions would be implemented as a preventative measure. At the end it will describe the patient actual experience of the post-operative complication and identify one priority in the patient’s discharge planning.
