Acute/Abortive Treatment

Although medicine has significantly advanced, migraines still remain difficult to treat. Typically, migraines are treated using two approaches; acute/abortive and preventative care. Abortive treatment is indicated during a migraine attack and is targeted to stop symptoms by constricting blood vessels and blocking pain pathways in the brain.36 These medications are known as triptans and target the chemical serotonin. Not only are fluctuating serotonin levels linked to causing migraines, but they are also important in the maintenance of extracranial vasoconstriction.37, 38 These drugs include: sumatriptan, zolmitriptan, almotriptan, rizatriptan, frovatriptan, naratriptan and eletriptan. Furthermore, a combination tablet of sumatriptan and naproxen

Case 2: Drug selection in treatment of migraine-Triptan Migraine is a severe headache felt as a throbbing pain at the front or side of the head. Triptan, the 5-hydroxytryptamine agonists are widely used as first-line abortive therapies for migraine headache patients. The currently available triptans offer clear evidence of improved clinical and economic outcomes compared with previous anti-migraine therapies, such as ergotamine alkaloids. However, the clinical and economic benefits of triptans are ambiguous. Hence, a triptan case study was carried out to introduce a systematic methodology to assist formulary decision makers in evaluating the cost-effectiveness of drugs within a category based on readily available data.…

In Kevin Keith’s article “Doctor’s Should Stop Treatment That Is Futile”, he claims that, regardless of difficulty, ending the treatment for those who wouldn’t benefit is the best thing to do. He uses pathos and logos, in the argumentative format, to give a detailed explanation of his claims to the guardians of patients and the medical community in a way that is both compassionate and insistent. Keith invokes an emotional response in the reader to open their minds to his reasoning, such as when he expresses that “The obvious advisability of this [aggressive care] in many hopeless cases was handled informally by hospital staff who agreed. Without consulting with the patients, that certain patients would be ‘allowed’ to slip away” (para. 2). This statement forces the reader to feel that they have no choice about aggressive care anyway, that is pointless to try because the decision was already made for them.…

Late-Term Abortion A Colorado woman accused of cutting open the belly of a pregnant woman, who was responding to a Craigslist ad, and removing the unborn child to show her family she was expecting a baby herself, is not being charged with murder. Under Colorado law, the perpetrator can only face such murder charges if the baby was alive outside the womb. Abortion opponents in Colorado have unsuccessfully pressed actions to pronounce a fetus as a human being, which would thus enable homicide charges to be filed for their bereavements. (Lacey-Bourdeaux) In simple terms, and granted current abortion laws, an abortion was performed outside of a clinic.…

Jeopardizing the Health of my Fetus. Introduction Berger (2015) states that “A cascade may begin before a woman realizes she is pregnant, as many toxins, illnesses, and experiences can cause harm early in pregnancy” (pg.112). She explains that there is an increase in the risk of abnormalities and birth problems during pregnancy due to these factors. The author defines these factors as teratogens; which is an agent or condition that can impair prenatal development.…

In reflection of the theme of my creative portfolio, a woman’s perspective on infertility, I have chosen an artwork by Heidi Holmes as my first artifact. What might appear as many dots scattered about on a wall, is actually thousands of pressed hydrangeas (1). Within the glass jar also seen in the photograph is thousands of more hydrangeas which are acting as potpourri scented like baby powder (1). This photograph of an exhibit by Holmes does indeed have a connection to infertility. This connection, which I will expound on, has to do with Holmes personal experience with infertility and confronts ideas such as the struggles women have when using In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).…

In terms of life and death, the government has no say. Abortion is already a taxing ordeal on the mother and her family, and forcing them to choose the baby over the mother isn’t fair. A fetus isn’t sentient while it’s in the womb, and claiming otherwise shows a lack of understanding of how life works. Because of these reasons, the choice of a late term abortion is a decision that should be made by the mother, and her alone.…

In today’s society, a rising debatable topic within America is that of the legalism of late-term abortion. Even though deciding to abort a fetus is seen to be the right of the mother under the Roe V. Wade case, choosing to end the life of a fetus when it is viable is murder. The unique genetic code that is given to a fetus is proof that life also begins at conception. The legalization of late-term abortion should be abolished in all fifty states due to evidence that show that it is legally and ethically wrong and also that abortion does not have to be an option. Fetal viability is determined when a fetus is able to live outside the womb.…
