Aging Reflection Essay

In the year 2068 I will turn seventy-four. For many people aging is daunting and unimaginable, but personally I find the idea of growing older quite exciting. Currently, at twenty I live with a chronic illness that is treatable but still at times crippling and the idea that some day I could live without it either through medication, gene therapy or transplant is not only mind-blowing but also very possible. As someone who is very interested in medical research I think that my peers and I will have the opportunity to be healthier than ever through advanced knowledge and innovation. Not only do I deal with Celiac Disease everyday but also I am also losing my vision faster than most people and often wonder about the application of ghost cells, …show more content…
If I was in the group that was entering later adulthood in today’s world this might mean going to church more or getting to know my priest better, but I feel that through social changes and cultural shifts my age group may be more likely to seek spiritual systems that reflect our generation such as yoga and meditation. Studies have shown that meditation can have a serious impact on the mental health and positive aging for the elderly (Alexander, Langer, Newman, Chandler, Davies). Not only could meditation and yoga help my spiritual wellness in my advanced age, it could also help improve my physical condition and …show more content…
In an attempt to care for others at a time when many people feel they are being cared for themselves, participation in altruism gives older adults a sense of belonging and purpose. My whole life I have loved volunteering and I feel that later in life it will be no different. Retirement is also a huge part of the lifestyle of older adults especially in America (Santrock, 2014, p. 587). Personally, I have very little desire to stop working. Positively, I am not seeking to follow a specific career path but instead work within a field I see very little need to stop being active within something I am passionate about. I plan to teach sexual education and do community outreach for teen moms and LGBT youth and there will always be need for mentors and grandparent roles within those areas. Whether or not I am still in a paid position at seventy-four I intend to still be an active part of the legacy I leave behind in my community (Santrock, 2014, p.

Before volunteering at the nursing home growing old seemed terrifying, and undesirable. However, after interacting with the residents I am not as fearful of growing old anymore. Mainly due to the fact that residents at this center still life active lives by attending different activities, visiting other residents and interacting with volunteers as well as staff. Maintaining this active lifestyle promotes brain activity and aids in retaining many significant mental capabilities. For example, numerous residents became aware of my schedule because I volunteered on the same day each week and when I skipped a week I was shocked that when I returned a few had noticed…

He states, “most deeply motivated people…productive and satisfied…hitch their desires to a cause larger than themselves” (Pink, p. 133), and this description of purpose is the cause for people to do things they feel most passionate about. Motivation is detailed in many levels and the changes humanity faces based on population and types of employment options drive people to find purpose and as Pink described the baby boomer generation, the sheer numbers within the work pool were “nudging purpose to the cultural center” and created a passion for volunteerism (Pink, p. 134). Interestingly, direct experience with baby boomer parents have shown two paths, one in which a career path in search of financial success and one more focused on support and volunteerism. Each path had their motivations and purpose and both have achieved successes.…

Many older adults recollect their lives with fond memories, allowing them to have hope and preserve their integrity (Berger, 2010). I would like to leave behind a sense of accomplishment for me and my family, to show them that life is more than what we have currently made it to be, which is living for the weekend. That the younger generation can do better than the older generation in regards to health, emotional health, financial stability and enjoyment of life. To “live a good life” would involve me being able to assist the people I love with their dreams and aspirations, whether that be with money, inspiration or just someone to talk to when they have joyous or devastating news. I want enough time, intelligence and compassion to do for others in ways that will affect their lives in a positively.…

Portrayal of the Older Adult in the Humanities In today’s world, there is a great misunderstanding about the aging process and a plethora of associated myths. Many people have a jaded view of aging and the elderly in general, which may be attributed to the false portrayals and stereotyping of the population in media platforms such as movies, television shows, and novels. There is a great disconnect between the current generations, which is even more concerning in our “aging society”, meaning that in the coming years, those over the age of 60 will outnumber those under 15 (MacArthur Foundation, 2009). A report published by the MacArthur Foundation (2009, p. 2) summed this problem up best, “Too much of what passes for knowledge and understanding…

In addition, the most neglected topic related to geriatric mental health is spiritual concerns. There have been reports that higher levels of spirituality lowers morbidity and mortality and predict slower cognitive decline. As a result, both the caregiver and the patient benefit; the caregiver respects and acknowledges the role religion and spirituality play for these elderly patients, and the patient benefits from the preservation of memory by their attachment to a higher power.…

A real problem in our youth foster systems today is that youth tend to "age out" of the foster system without any program to help them transition from childhood to adulthood and beyond. During the stresses of aging out and trying to figure out where they'll live, if they'll go to school, and what they'll do next, having a sibling support system in place can be extremely helpful to youth. What Aging Out Means When children turn 18 and graduate from high school, they are considered to have aged out of the foster system. Aging out means that placements may fade away and assistance may not be available. It is a vulnerable time in the lives of America's youth.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…

For my reflective essay I have chosen to look at the challenges of working with older people in a health and human service setting and in particular how this would challenge me to work as an effective practitioner in the discipline of nutrition. In the last five years I have worked and spent time with older adults from different settings, some who are healthy and engaged in all areas of their lives, living independently and contributing to their community. I have also spent time with older adults who are determined to live out their years in their own home despite chronic pain, disease and social isolation and finally I have worked with older adults living in aged care facilities who have multiple conditions, prescribed multiple medications…
