Activity Series Lab Report

Improved Essays
The main purpose of this experiment was to create an activity series. As shown above, the metals, in order of ease of reactivity, with Magnesium at the top (Being the most reactive) and Silver at the bottom (Being the least reactive). This shows that magnesium is more likely to give up its electron that aluminum or silver. The elements located near the bottom to this series would not react with other metals. This was proven when silver was placed in various aqueous solutions and did not react with them. Magnesium reacted with every aqueous solution it was placed in. This was an important observation for magnesium to be put at the top of the activity series, because it was able to react with aluminum, zinc, tin, hydrogen, copper, and sliver.

Denali, Alaska, 17,660 Feet People tend to experience dizziness, headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, decrease in brain function, headache, dizziness, frostbite, hypothermia, etc. at higher altitudes due to a decrease of atmospheric pressure. Mark experienced a shortness of breath and could not seem to feel better even when he paused his climb to “take a breather.” This is very common for people who are not accustomed to the difference in pressure because of the difference of altitudes. Same goes for Emily who experienced a headache due to a decrease in oxygen in the air and therefore, in her body.…

A range of concentrations (1nM to 30μM) of acetylcholine (Ach) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was administered to organ bath containing rat ileum. Ach and 5-HT induced contractions from 3nM (Fig. 1) and 10nM (Fig. 2) onwards respectively, both generating a shallow slope at the beginning of the concentration-response curve. EC50 of Ach is 7.47 x 10-7M whereas EC50 of 5-HT is 7.97 x 10-7M. The contraction generated by Ach and 5-HT was expressed in % Emax. As shown in Fig. 1 and 2, % Emax increased with increasing agonists concentrations and 100% Emax was achieved at a concentration of 30μM. Presence of error bars in both figures indicated the presence of variability in data.…

The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the heart rate through the dive reflex Homeostasis is the body’s ability to maintain and balance its normal body function in varying conditions. The autonomic nervous system relates to the peripheral nervous system. Its objective is to sustain homeostasis of the visceral organs. In this investigation we will observe the mammalian diving reflex, which implicates the autonomic nervous system. In mammals, immersing the face in water initiates numerous physiological reactions that exploit the time that can be completed under water.…

Revisiting the results, it could be organized into a small incomplete activity series of metals. Magnesium would be first since it reacts with all the aqueous solutions and displaces their metals to create a reaction. Second metal in this activity series would be aluminum. The reason for this is because aluminum displaced all the aqueous solutions except the one that contains magnesium. This proves that magnesium is more reactive than aluminum, putting aluminum under magnesium.…

From the table, we can see there were no colonies growing on the tryptophan dropout and the isoleucine drop out, on all the medium plates except for the 1X dilution Tobacco medium plate. For the positive control, increasing concentrations of ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS) resulted in a decreasing number of colonies growing on the medium plates. This means that EMS is mutating the yeast in such a way that they would not be able to grow on the YPD. For each concentrations of the positive control, there are 3 different colours of the colonies with white being the most common. White means that there were no mutations to the yeast, which could explain why there are so many colonies as they are able to grow on the YPD plate.…

INTRODUCTION Our nerve cells are highly involved in the environmental and internal complex processes of our body. In order for the input and output mechanisms to go smoothly, these highly specialized cells, called neurons, must communicate not only with one another, but also with other muscles, and organs in an effective way throughout the body using electrical synapses. While neurons are made up off a cell body referred to as the soma, dendrites, and axon. Nerves consist of axons and sometimes nerve fibers, and each of those axons has the ability to produce an action potential.…

If a quantitative solution needs to be prepared, there are a series of steps that must be followed in order to get accurate answers. there are several objects needed to prepare it, including a 500 ml graduated cylinder, deionized water, and sodium phosphate dodecahydrate as the aqueous solution. The first step is to find the mass of the solution, sodium phosphate. In the formula, sodium's atomic mass is multiplied by 3 because there is the original weight times 3 atoms of sodium in the formula. using this method, calculate the rest of the mass.…

If I were the Police Cheif in Kansas City during the time of the experiment I would make many changes. I believe that within the experiment there should have been alot more preventative patrol because it is the most efficent way to patrol. By having preventative patrol it makes it easier to catch crimes befor they happen verses random patrol. I feel as if there were more preventative patrol within the experiment there would have been better results come out of the experiment. I believe that preventative control with marked or even unmarked cars would be very beneficial the officers would know exactly where to patrol and be at the right place at the right time.…

The experiment was done to reveal how workouts supplements like C4 can affect the development of humans. Other experiments like this one can also be used to show how some substances may affect the development of humans. In the experiment the independent variable was the amount of the C4 that was placed into each well in the experiment, and the dependent variable was the zebrafish embryos after they were exposed to the C4. In addition, 2 controls were set up, containing a ocean/embryo solution, and the control was used to compare the effects between the solutions containing C4 and the solutions containing no C4.…

Task 1 and 2 First ionisation energy – The first ionisation energy is the energy required to remove the most loosely held electron from one mole of gaseous atoms to produce one mole of gaseous ions each with a charge of +1. The first ionisation decreases as you go down a group. This is because the electrons are getting further away from the nucleus meaning it is easier to remove the outer electron. There is also less shielding thus allowing the outer electron to be removed much more easily.…

For Part A, the solution was to contain either silver or lead, while in Part B, the solution that was set on the side form Part A was identified to contain either calcium or barium. Part C explored a different method through the use of cation flame tests to observe colored flames from six metal chloride solutions. In Part A, the initial step was to add HCl to the unknown sample.…

My visits to the gym gave me a lot of insight as to how space in the gym can be gendered and how this may be a result of the social construction of gender. In the gym, my observations indicated that weight-lifting equipment and free weights were used more so by men than women. In the instances that I visited, I only saw one woman utilizing weights. This may be due to the mere aggressiveness and masculinity that is associated with lifting weights, and by a woman engaging in these acts, she may be seen as transgressing gender norms. Furthermore, a woman engaging in weightlifting activities may be seen as lesbian or transgressing heteronormative standards.…

Once again this varying intensity in reaction with the water relates to electronegativity, as the lower in the group the reactant is, the more readily it reacts. Referring to the observations previously mentioned, it is shown that not only does Sodium and Potassium reacts more readily than that of Lithium; it is also shown that the complete reaction is shorter. This is because the atom within the substance is able to discharge its electrons quicker due to the difference in…
