Activity Scheduling Activity scheduling is perhaps one of the most beneficial techniques, especially for clients who suffer from depression. The idea behind this technique is to help clients avoid feeling down by finding alternative activities to keep their minds active and away from negative thinking; scheduling activities the client would find enjoyable would allow them to have a better and more positive outlook on life (Murdock, 2013, p. 340). Whenever Olivia gets home from work, she instantly feels depressed because of the environment in which she lives. Her relationships her sisters is non-existent and they are hardly ever home. Her father, Raul constantly yells and calls her names on a daily basis. Olivia’s only option is to lock herself in her bedroom and continue to think about her misery. Scheduling weekly activities can help Olivia escape these unhealthy behaviors. …show more content…
Taking a trip to a local library or a bookstore will allow Olivia to participate in an activity she enjoys and at the same time remove herself from an environment that continues to bring down her mood. Another activity Olivia has discussed is therapy that she wishes she could do is learning how to cook. She has read many cookbooks in the past and has always wanted to try out the recipes, but has never had the opportunity. Joining a cooking class could help Olivia in many ways. It would allow her to step out of her comfort zone, meet new people and perhaps develop a social life, and she would also be learning to prepare new and healthy meals. Activity scheduling is not supposed to lead clients to avoid their problems; on the contrary, the goal is to find alternative methods that will allow clients like Olivia to find enjoyment in life despite any negative life circumstances; it is still possible to find joy in
