Will Extra Curricular Activities Help Your Future Or Harm?
Often, extracurricular activity is seen to have a positive effects on a student’s grade point average and academic success (Wang, Jing, Shiveley, Johathan, n.d ). Extracurricular activities ranging from sports to debate club are seen not only to help the student maintain a higher GPA (grade point average), but also make for a better caliber student and member of their university (Hollrah, Rachel n.d.). Further, studies have shown that extracurricular activities better the person as a whole, limiting behavioral issues such as bipolar disorder, anxiety, social anxiety, etc. (Massoni, E 2011). Thus, until a survey is conducted involving a greater number of the student body, there is no responsible way to deny or confirm the hypothesis. With the data that was available, there is indication that the combination of extracurricular activity and study hours may have some effect on GPA; however, this could be as a result of the small sample size creating a higher margin error and lower confidence level. Therefore, to what extent these variables affect GPA at this point is unknown. None of the individual variables showed significance independently; thus, it may be the combination of the factors which are affecting GPA, or they may not truly be affecting GPA at all. Nevertheless, it is important to note that of those surveyed, most participants did state that they would assume extracurricular activities would help the student focus and strive for the highest grade point average. The original hypothesis, students who participate in extracurricular activities would attain higher GPA’s, was not denied in anyway nor confirmed. Another experimenter could in fact come and recreate the entire study to provide new data on the subject, which could determine a better confirmation or negation of the
