Active Shooter Procedures Since the beginning of January 2018, there have been multiple school shootings across America. Shootings are becoming more prevalent, and although active shooter drills are being implemented to prepare for such instances, are they actually effective? Is there more that can be done to defend against these violent acts within schools? Yes, students and teachers can both be more prepared when encountering these terrifyingly violent situations. What is an active shooter? An active shooter, according to U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Teachers and students should go through a defense course and know how to defend themselves against, as well as disarm, an active shooter. This knowledge could be the difference between life and death, and it could prevent mass casualties. With the current approach, there is no way to avoid mass casualties. Students are like sitting ducks awaiting their death, and if the shooter were to enter the classroom, most students would inevitably be killed. This horror could be eluded by simple defense training and having a plan that is actually effectual. In other circumstances, students could flee the scene or even throw objects at the assailant. Someone trying to avoid items flying through the air toward them from multiple angles is less likely to actually carry out their previous intentions. It could at least leave enough time for law enforcement to arrive and neutralize the
