After watching the video I do not feel as though Alan is listening actively to his employees. His body language and facial expressions, also known as kinesics (Wood, 2012) does not display any compassion. He also does not appear to be interested in the feedback from his employees. When discussing the amount of work that Gretchen produces, she was expressing the fact that she pays close attention to detail and therefore her work amount may be smaller but is of a high quality, but Alan just kept emphasizing that she needed to produce more. To listen effectively we must be willing to focus our minds, to organize and interpret other’s ideas and feelings, and also to express our interest on both the content level and to retain what a speaker says (Wood, 2012). Alan can also learn how to use appropriate nonverbal and paraphrasing while conducting the evaluations. He could have nodded his head which would indicate a nonverbal cue he is attentive and repeating or paraphrasing what was said by both his employees this would not only allow the employees to feel like Alan cared about their concerns and issues, but also allowed Alan to better understand his employees perspective of their job performance. Alan should also learn how to avoid any internal obstacles he is experiencing, such as he preoccupation with his own feelings of inadequacy of being underqualified to conduct the evaluations, this would allow him to be more open to the mindful listening required to communication effectively with his
