Active Engagement Plan

“The goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for a child to invent and discover, to create men who are capable of doing new things”, these are the wise words of Jean Piaget. Although I have learned so many valuable future teaching tools from my current study of curriculum, two of the most important takeaways we have discussed, for me personally, are backward lesson planning and active engagement. These topics have shaped my outlooks as a future teacher and I cannot wait to implement them into my classroom. Lesson development and progression assist teachers with the finest lessons possible. Learning the correct curriculum and aligning it with the common core standards are vital to ensure that children receive the best education possible. This process starts with the end goal in mind. Backward design initiates with the objectives of a unit or course, what students are expected to learn and can do, and then continues backward to craft lessons that achieve those desired goals. When teachers have exactly what they expect from their students and …show more content…
It is subsequently important that the teacher does an excellent job implementing active engagement in the classroom by always presenting lessons and information in an upbeat manner. I believe that if you deliver information in a positive way, there will be positive outcomes, and if you are giving information in a negative and lethargic way the students will not get excited about education. If the child is not engaged, the child is simply not learning the material because they do not care. That is the downfall with using unengaging activities. Being able to observe active engagement in CIE 343 helped me realized how important it is in the classroom and how vital the role of active engagement plays in students

Book Overview I read the book Teach Like a Pirate by Dave Burgess (2012). This book is not a step-by-step manual that makes us better educators, it simply talks about how we as educators can use creativity and motivation to enhance student engagement, as well as, boost passion and energy within ourselves to create an environment that is warm, inviting, and empowering. I was able to teach a small group lesson at Garfield Elementary School on Wednesday March 21st. The 6 students in my small group were able to learn more about the long /i/ pattern, reinforce what they already knew, and addressed misconceptions they may have. The lesson I taught went very smoothly, and I do feel that almost all of these students achieved the intended learning target. Each student was able to share words that fit the pattern they heard in Splat the Cat: Goodnight Sleep Tight, both during the reading and after when we reviewed. This showed me that they understood the long /i/ pattern used within that story.…

While observing the Kindergarten classroom that has a ratio of 17 to 1, there was not clear evidences of which curriculum was apparent. However, when discusses with Mrs. Wohlfeil she uses the backwards design in her classroom to educate her children. The basic rationale motivating backward design is that starting with the end goal, rather than a starting with the first lesson chronologically delivered during a unit or course, helps teachers design a sequence of lessons, problems, projects, presentations, assignments, and assessments that result in students achieving the academic goals of a course or unit—that is, actually learning what they were expected to learn (“Backwards”,2014).The educational goals of a course or unit will be a given state’s…

Over the last five weeks, my understanding of SSGH education has changed a lot. When I was younger, all I ever remember about SSGH was lecturing, reading an analysis of a historical document or article, and then filling out worksheets. While they were all valid strategies, they didn't leave a lasting impression on me, because while I'm sure I can read an article and analyze it today, I doubt I can recall any of the information without prompts. Over the course of this course, I have learned various ways to incorporate activities into the classroom without detracting from the old methods of reading and writing.…
