Action Sport Of Sport For All (SFA)

Sport for All’(referred to here as SFA from now on) was a campaign created in 1972 by the Sports Council (Jeffery’s, K. 2012), this was their first policy and made possible by the granting of executive status, freeing it from direct ministerial control. SFA encompassed many initiatives aimed at getting more people of all ages playing sport. Some critics thought that the amount of money to be spent on the scheme was too low when compared to other countries. One of the main barriers that had to be faced moving into the 80’s was the volatility of the economic climate, particularly from 1983 to 1988 (Economicshelp.org). Action sport was made possible in 1981 through funds made available by Dennis Howel (labour Minister for sport). Hylton, K and Bramham, P (2008). Its goals were to use sports leaders to engage young people – particularly the unemployed and disaffected youth in inner city and poorer areas (Collins, M 2009). The scheme encompassed the local authorities, education authorities and voluntary organizations.
