Throughout One Today, Richard Blanco uses both anecdotal flashbacks and motifs to portray opportunity and equality; conveying a positive view of a shared American experience. Blanco’s use of anecdotal flashbacks help contribute to the positive concept of a shared American experience and connects to Walt Whitman’s poem of I Hear America Singing. In the second paragraph, Blanco describes the similar experiences and daily routines of all Americans. By starting this description with Americans who “clean tables, read ledgers, or save lives” (Blanco 13), he is able to transition into a flashback of his own mother’s similar story. He speaks of his mother working hard to “ring-up groceries… for 20 years, so [Blanco] could write this poem”…

Growing up, I was always a hard worker. At age nine I sold enough newspaper subscriptions to win a bicycle in my hometown of Allegheny, Pennsylvania. It was also at that age, that I was fortunate enough for my family to travel to New York for my career. At age thirteen, I was a chorus girl and later on when I was fifteen, I performed at Pan- American exposition in the “Trip to the Moon” exhibit. At age sixteen, I had an opportunity to perform in Mr. Bluebird along with my mother at the Iroquois theater.…

I hear the familiar yell of my mother from downstairs as I scramble to fix the bookshelf I had just toppled over. I was twelve at the time, yet my curiosity and boyish desire to explore led me to my failed attempt to reach the fabled attic. It was about ten feet tall to reach the cord that would open the attic, so I devised a scheme to use the bookcase as a stepstool. The feeble bookcase had too narrow of a base to support my wiry 90 pound frame, and shortly after I commenced the climb I found myself on the floor. “WHAT WAS THAT?!”…

The first time the class met, we were in the smallest dance room. A long wooden bar ran across the back wall, parallel to a mirror covered wall. On the shelves around the room were what seemed like hundreds of trophies that the local high school dance team had won over the years. The first thing I remembered thinking was “Wow, I’m going to have trophies just like this one day!” and little did I know that my reward from baton twirling would be much greater than any trophy or medal.…

Jhumpa Lahiri’s “Once in a Lifetime” is about a girl, named Hema, talking to a teenage boy Kaushik about what happened when he entered her life again. The story is written like a letter by older Hema from a future time to Kaushik, who is not present. We don’t know what happened to him and she is writing this letter to him. The most important part of this story is that Jhumpa Lahiri uses the first and second person perspective to tell the story which helps the reader to feel familiar with the family and the culture, creates a nostalgia even if the story did not happen to the reader, helps the reader understand the relationship between “I” and “you” as well as feeling the “I”s emotions while reading, and the most importantly makes the epiphany…

Film, in general, is a narrative medium, or, at least, a medium of many narrative capacities” (Kuhn). For a film to be a narrative it must present a story with a series of events in ways that imply connections between one event and the next. Narratives must, therefore, have constituent parts, which are also discernibly related; however, the type of relationship may vary greatly. Generally we expect a cause-and-effect relationship: one event has the effect of causing another event, which causes another, and so on. Narratives also require narration, or communication.…
