Shakespeare’s theatre was the main form of entertainment and excitement because of this Shakespeare would have had to make his play engaging from the start as people had high expectations and were unforgiving. His masterpiece Romeo and Juliet is one of his best plays. Shakespeare’s play is very good and has the themes of love and hate which are opposites like Romeo and Juliet but opposites attract. In Act One we have the characters of Tybalt and the Nurse who are opposites. The play shows how people felt about their family and kinsmen.

The characters of Sampson and Gregory open to create fear and excitement - which is what is needed - by them using crude language and through themand insulting the Capulets which from the start shows us about their feud. Sampson talks of the “dog of the house of Capulet” and makes them seem weak as he threatens to overpower

We know that Juliet trusts the Nurse as she tells her about Romeo and gets her to arrange the marriage. We also know she is a really strong character as she gets harassed by Romeo’s best friend Mercutio and is called a whore countless times but she keeps her language professional and scares Romeo which in those times she would be a second class citizen and would never dare say that and the people in the pit would respect her for that. When the Nurse tells her to marry Paris it makes her feel betrayed and ultimately makes her kill herself. This shocks the audience and makes us furious at her this is used to make drama and Shakespeare accomplishes in rilling up the audience and creating drama and friction. In Act II, Scene 2 of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s diction is very complex and sets the mood for the scene. For him, she has “two of the fairest stars in all the heaven” as eyes (Shakespeare Line 17). The use of ‘fairest stars’ conveys the point that Juliet seems unique to Romeo.…

In a very simple manner the nurse in Romeo and Juliet is there purely to give some light relief from the rest of the play using sexual humour. However, if looked at in more detail many more roles of the nurse come into play than simply to make the audience laugh. In Act 1 Scene 3 the nurse is portrayed in a very positive and light hearted manner particularly when she tells Juliet to 'seek happy nights to happy days ' it could be suggested that is simply a light hearted sexual reference put in the play by Shakespeare to amuse the uneducated groundlings at the front. The majority of the audience would have found this amusing as at the time the audience would be mainly male and probably drunk so they would have found the sexuality of the nurse…
