Act One Crucible Study Questions
An overture is an preface into something more substantial that happens later in the story. One of Reverend Parris's most presenting characteristics is that he is self-centered. It seems that he cares more about his career and reputation, then he does about his dying daughters health. Another is that he always seems to be paranoid about certain things.
Miller describes the puritans as people who only worshipped God, and didn't allow "vain enjoyment." Millers opinion was that the Puritans had no time to joke around, and if they did, they would be punished.

Tituba is the family servant from Barbados. She is drawn to the rook because she loves Betty, and wants to see her. She is frightened at the same time because trouble is about to come.

That phrase means that she is manipulative towards people, meaning she masks what she's really feeling.

Deference means respect. Parris showed Ann respect because he wanted to show no signs of any funny business going on. He didn't want people talking around the town that this might've been witchcraft.
