Acne vulgaris is a medical term for acne, which is one of the most common skin disorders in adolescents and young adults. About eighty-five percent of individuals in westernized societies are affected by acne vulgaris between the ages of twelve and twenty-five years old. (Lavers & Courtenay, 2011). The prevalence of acne vulgaris varies between gender and age. Females have a much more early onset of acne vulgaris than males, however, males suffer from a much more severe form of acne. Individuals who have acne vulgaris may experience several physical symptoms, such as pain, bleeding, and swelling which can lead to permanent scarring and disfigurement. Acne occurs when the body produces excessive amounts of hormones which cause the oil glands to secrete more oil. The excess secreted oil combines with the dead skin cells infected with bacteria in our bodies leading to clogged pores. An irritation in the skin begins due to the clotting of the pores which then produces a red swollen bump known as a pimple. The name of the bacteria that live on the skin is Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) which gives rise to the infection of pimples, leading to acne (Lavers & Courtenay, 2011). A few of the most common areas where acne vulgaris may be present is on the face, chest, and back. Young adults are primarily affected by acne vulgaris because of the imbalance of hormone production, or stress produced by either school, work, or social life, or the switching of previously own medications prior to the outburst of acne. Acne vulgaris affects several young adults worldwide, negatively impacting their self-esteem and mental health. Anxiety, anger, and depression are often emotions experienced by young adults with acne vulgaris which can often lead to a poor quality of life. The purpose of this paper is to spread awareness of acne vulgaris which would allow for young adults to be informed of preventative measures that will positively influence their life and emotional well-being. The impact of acne vulgaris on quality of life is becoming more common among young adults due to their social and professional roles (Durai & Nair, 2015).
