Acne Vulgaris: A Population-Based Study

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit. It results from bacterial colonization of hair follicles by Propionibacterium acnes, inflammation, altered keratinization, and androgen-induced increased sebum production. Acne vulgaris can be caused by foods, inherited from parents, stress, but is found to peak at the stage of puberty. Although, acne vulgaris is considered to a heterogeneous disorder, a population-based study was conducted on a group of homogenous ethnic males between the ages of 0 to 19 years old. The purpose of this population-based study is to clarify a relationship between acne vulgaris and puberty. The study also showed that twelve to fifteen years old boys in early adolescence with acne showed greater testicular volumes in penis length than boys older than sixteen years old. Acne vulgaris in different altitudes were observed. The observed data showed that acne vulgaris occurred more frequently at lower altitudes than in higher altitudes. Obesity was observed and it does not play a role in acne vulgaris. The results of this population-based study showed no relationship to be observed between gynecomastia and acne vulgaris. A relationship between puberty and acne vulgaris was shown. Further studies are needed to show risk factors of acne vulgaris. I am eager to see the further studies on risk factors and acne vulgaris. I did learn from the population-based study and believed was ethically conducted. I did not know that different altitudes could cause acne vulgaris in males. However, I did know that puberty was a key factor in acne vulgaris. I hope to see a healthy solution to prevent acne vulgaris from happening during and after
