ACL Injuries in Athletes
ACL tears are a very common injury in athletes. “Roughly one in seventeen hundred people experience an ACL injury to some degree in their lifetime”(Wpadmin). For athletes alon“there are between 250,000 and 300,000 ACL injuries per year” (Medical History). The injury occurs more from non- contact between athletes than with continuous contact. There are many problems that come from tearing your ACL. One of the hardest and toughest obstacles to overcome is the athlete’s ability to jump back from adversities. Psychological factors are typically responsible for delayed returns after the injury.

The first thing that will happen is most likely a popping noise when the injury occurs. In the following hours the knee will start swelling this is known as hemarthrosis ,this is when the knee fills up with blood. Most of the pain in this injury is due to the swelling of the joint. Once all of the swelling goes down they injured person may have surgery. “After surgery 13% of athletes (in a certain study) gave up participation because of their knee function”( By Medical History ). Fear is a common emotion expressed because the athlete does not want the injury to reoccur. This is known as the fear avoidance belief, “the development of fear, pain, anxiety, and disability as a result of a painful experience or injury” (Lentz).The fear overcomes the athletes, thus leading them to be hindered by the fear of movement and pain. This creates functional limitations, which can negatively affect the rehabilitation progress and the athlete 's return to their sport. “Fear avoidance beliefs lead to pain catastrophizing, an exaggerated response to actual or anticipated pain, which drives avoidance behaviors” (Lentz). It is crucial that the athlete’s rehabilitation support team instills psychological readiness and confidence in the athlete so that they do not experience these
