1. When Ackerman begins by stating that “Love is the great intangible,” she is trying to say that love is the clarity of life. Love in a scenes, is something that has such a strong meaning to us as humans that when it is shown we cannot help but acknowledge its presence. This word however also is a word that we cannot fully understand. In the first paragraph when the author talks about the little girl asking her parent how much they love them, the response of the parent is 100 times the biggest thing we could think of. This means love is something we can measure meaning we cannot fully comprehend it.
2. Ackerman uses personification by saying love cheered the forlorn, calmed the beast, glorified the humble and much more. While describing this

    1. The wife of Young Goodman Brown is named “Faith” for a reason. It gives the reader a clue that Faith was named to represent the faith of Young Goodman Brown; such as the faith in this own life or the faith in god. For example when it states “Come, Goodman Brown, cried his fellow-traveler; this is a dull pace for the beginning of the journey. Take my staff, if you are soon weary” and “We are but a little way in the forest yet.”…

Revered as the culmination of all his work, C.S. Lewis’ Till We Have Faces is the recipient of scholars’ praise and the author’s favoritism. Scholars praise Lewis for his ability to transform a narrow classical myth into a universally applicable story. While this universality owes itself to the fictitious nature of the novel, it is also rooted in the theme of love. In order to fully elucidate the concept of love as he understood it, Lewis published The Four Loves. He first distinguishes between two base forms of love: need-love and gift-love.…

    1) I liked how she starts her story with the emotional moment of the accident, that part made me feel dizzy and disorientated like her, at the beginning it was kind of hard to interpreted the text and what was happening at the time. The parts were the police were treating her like an animal really made me mad and I felt a little bit of impotence when hearing about how they waited so long to help her and they hurt her even more. I was actually disgusted but not surprised of the way the police treated her in the hospital, it was to be expected, besides she “killed” one of their own and on top of it she was a woman of color. I admire Assata greatly in this chapter, she is so brave and has a strong will of power, if I were in her place I would have cried and begged since the first punch to the stomach. I can connect the way they treated Assata during…

Humans have always looked for the answer to finding happiness in life. For the majority of people, they believe that love will bring them this sense of happiness. In Barbara Fredrickson’s, “Selections from Love 2.0: How Our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything We Feel, Think, Do and Become,” she talks about how we see love in the wrong way and that we should start looking at love the way the body sees it. This change in perception of the definition of love allows people to have a better chance of obtaining love and having a better sense of self. With the conventional notions of love and relationships, love becomes more complex by giving people the sense of longing.…

Even under the influence of others, love remains the same. The feelings of love do not change or go away easily due to a small and insignificant matter. For instance, he says that love is strong despite hardships and it is so strong that he uses a metaphor to emphasize the importance of love. In the same way that stars guide ships and allow them navigate properly, love guides people because without love, he implies that people would be lost. In addition, he notes that love cannot be measured physically, but only internally through depth.…

Perspectives of Love with Chemistry and the Mind Since the beginning of mankind, compassion and attraction has been imbedded in our DNA as an unconditional connection. The general sense of love has been acknowledged and is often celebrated as such an external allure leads into a lifetime bond of internal thoughts and feelings. However, the true definition of love is often left alone as the entity or feeling of loved can be felt, but cannot be described in detail. In The Lady’s Not For Burning, Christopher Fry explores the relationship of love and the mind to portray love as a physical attraction that develops into an influencing connection of the minds, while in “Love’s Alchemy,” John Donne expresses the relationship of love and alchemy to…

How can love influence society? Love is known as a beautiful feeling that makes people feel comfortable, good, special, etc. But love also has some negative consequences and these consequences generally affect a lot the society. Furthermore, the worst part of all is that we cannot stop love's consequences, good or bad; these cannot be stopped because, according to Diane Ackerman's quote "love is the great intangible" which means we cannot touch it nor feel it with any of our senses, if not with our heart. But what does love finally do in the society?…

Sometimes Love does not Conquer All Although love is usually considered to be a universal theme in literature known to “conquer all” it is better categorized as a theme that sometimes results in the ultimate failure of those pursuing it (Mork). The idea that love conquers all in literature is misleading because a large portion of literature opposes this theme. Throughout the readings of this semester, examples of love pursuits that result in failure are seen in “The Quadroons” and Charlotte Temple. Both pieces demonstrate the protagonist falling in love and expecting everything to work out, but this concept is not necessarily true. Outside of literature, love is defined as a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person (dictionary.com).…
