EXPERIMENT
Acids, Bases, and Neutrals

Problem
Are common house-hold products pHs balanced and neutral?

Information pH measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. Its concept was introduced in 1909 by biochemist Soren Sorensen. The scale ranges from 0-14. Solutions that range from 0 to 6 are considered to be Acidic. Solution that’s on the Acidic end of the scale is low in ph, high in hydrogen ion, and low in hydroxyl ions. An acid have a sour taste, reacts with metal, are corrosive, and are considered an electrolyte because it conduct an electrical charge. Examples of acid are hydrochloric acid, citric acid and vinegar. Solutions that are Bases on the scale have a pH

6. Create a date table to keep track of your hypothesis.
7. Label your table “Product” on the x axis and pH level 0-14 on the y axis.
8. Place products in the order from 1-20.
9. Get a dime size sample of each product and place them in the chemistry plate.
10. One by one dip a ph strip into the product and wait for color change.
11. Match pH strip to the color on the wheel to determine the pH level.
12. Record pH level on the data chart.
13. Clean up when done.

Data Table
Acid, Base, or Neutral PRODUCT | PH LEVEL | Lime Juice | 2 | Gogurt | 4 | Sunblock | 6 | Cetaphil | 5 | Aveeno | 5 | Olay Complete | 6 | B.B Lotion | 5 | Shaving Cream | 7 | Olive Oil Shampoo | 6 | Baby Wash | 5 | Color Protection Shampoo | 4 | Neutrogena | 4 | Toothpaste | 8 | Vicks | 5 | Alchol | 6 | Purell | 5 | Car Polish | 5 | Mr Clean | 9 | Lysol | 9 | Bleach | 6 |

Analysis
The Data table above shows the name of the product on the left and the pH results on the right. According to the data table hypothesis is rejected.

Conclusion
It is assumed that products 1&2 are acids, product 3-8 are neutrals and products 9-20 are bases.According to the hypothesis, lime juice and gogurt are acids, but so were many other products that were thought to be neutrals and bases. Out of the 6 that were thought to be neutrals the data shows 1 that was correct. Out of the 12 that were thought to be bases 3 was correct. Base on the data hypothesis
