Introduction
What is a leadership?
Merriam-Webster defines leadership in three ways: a position as a leader of a group, organization, etc., the time when a person holds the position of leader, and the power or ability to lead other people. In an organizational or business all of these apply. However, the final definition of ability applies most to this answering this question for purposes of this review. Leadership is often identified in the traits and characteristics necessary for what society views as a leader. These characteristics and traits often point to the ability to create or increase effectiveness and efficiency throughout an organization. If we quantify leadership in to a process of inputs to outputs the input would be the traits considered necessary, while the outputs would be the measures of effectiveness and efficiency instituted during the span of leadership.
What is servant leadership?
Defined in the early 1970’s by Robert Greenleaf, the concept of servant leadership entails a growth process of a desire to serve, followed by a desire to lead, and going beyond one’s self-interest. (Dierendonck, 2011) This in turn creates an atmosphere of encouraging followers to become leaders. Since Greenleaf’s original work numerous theories have abounded with either servant leadership as portion of overall leadership within an organization or as the central theme of leadership.
