Acid Rain On Photosynthesis Of Egeria Densa

Improved Essays
Abstract
This experiment investigates the effect that acid rain (simulated by altering the pH of the water using 0.5 molar Hydrochloric acid) has on the photosynthetic rate of the aquatic plant Egeria densa. For this experiment I used a dissolved oxygen probe to measure the dissolved oxygen content of the water with an altered pH. By tracking the dissolved oxygen content of the water I was able to monitor the photosynthetic rates of the plants with the knowledge that high levels of dissolved oxygen indicate a high rate of photosynthesis (the higher the dissolved oxygen content, the higher the photosynthetic rate of the plant). I conducted this experiment on 15 individual sprigs of Egeria densa, monitoring each sprig using the dissolved oxygen

The purpose of this lab is to examine cross sections from the leaves of C3 and C4 plants and to determine the morphological differences between them while relating those differences to their metabolism. In C3 plants the carbon dioxide is first incorporated into a 3-carbon compound. Their stomata are open during the day and photosynthesis takes place throughout the mesophyll cells. In comparison C4 plants, the CO2 is first incorporated into a 4-carbon compound. Their stomata are open during the day and photosynthesis takes place within the inner cells.…

Each chamber in the eco column had a specific purpose and the success of the eco column was depended on the chambers’ cooperation. The ecocolumn being a smaller scale of the real thing, the presence of biotic components is low compared to a real life ecosystem which would contain various different types of flora and fauna. The lab requires us to measure the pH level to see how acidic or alkaline the water is on a scale of 0-14. Lastly certain variables such as room temperature and human changes need to be controlled. Hypotheses:…

In this study, the effects of both varying temperatures and light intensity upon the photosynthetic rate of spinach leaves were observed. Using the ‘spinach immersion’ technique, the rate of photosynthesis under various conditions was quantified by observing the amount of spinach floating on top of a sodium bicarbonate solution. The sodium bicarbonate solution simultaneously supplied the spinach with carbon dioxide for use in photosynthesis, and caused it to sink. When the leaf underwent photosynthesis and produced oxygen gas, the leaf floated to the surface. It was hypothesized that an increase of either temperature or light intensity would lead to an increased rate of photosynthesis, to a degree.…

The first experiment on the effects of acid rain germination of radish seeds, materials used were twenty radish seeds, , acid rain solution, pH strips, paper towels, two petri dishes, and tap water. The second experiment on testing the effects acid rain had on radish plant growth, the materials used were twelve radish seeds, six plastic cups, potting soil, two acid rain solutions (one with a pH of 3and one with a pH of five), tap water, UV lights, and six plastic bags. These were all materials used throughout the course of the lab. The method used for testing the effects of acid rain on radish seed germination is rather simple.…

Introduction: Leaf Disk float in water alone. When a solution consisting of a small amount of sodium bicarbonate is added to the water it causes the leaf disk to sink. As photosynthesis continues in the leaf disk it releases oxygen and causes the leaf disk to rise. While cellular respiration is occurring also the rate that the disk raise is an in implicit measurement of the net rate of photosynthesis. The independent variable in this lab is the solution and the light because it can be controlled.…

Air was being blown into the water with a straw in order to contain CO2 The Elodea plants was placed in two different beakers that contained at least 50mL of water in one beaker, and ph 3 solution in the other. These two beakers were labeled as treatment one and two while there was one beaker with just water in it being the control. All three beakers were placed 30cm away from a lamp with a white light bulb and was exposed beneath the light for a total of 60 minutes. Once the 60 minutes were up the Elodea plants were taken out of the two beakers that contained water and ph 3 acid solution. All three beakers were then placed on a white sheet of paper to be able to contrast the color better once three drops of phenolphthalein was added in the three beakers with a small dropper (Walsh MJ and Wostl RL. 2013).…

The purpose of this EEI is to create and analyse an experiment that relates to and supports the theory of osmosis in biological cells. Cells are the biological building block for all life; all living organisms have cells also. Cells provide structure, absorb nutrients from food and convert those nutrients into energy so that the cell can carry out specialized functions. There are two main categories with most organisms and their cells; prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The distinctive difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes is that eukaryotic cells contain membrane-bound organelles, such as the nucleus, while as prokaryotic cells do not.…

Oaks trees (Quercus species) have adaptations to withstand drought but the trade off of those adaptations is multiple long-term negative effects on photosynthesis. These adaptations help to tolerate harsh conditions, specifically in drought. In situations of long periods of drought it has been researched that oak trees lose their ability to effectively perform photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process in which sunlight is converted in to chemical energy. Plants make their own food by using energy from the sun to make glucose.…

Acid Rain Controversy The acid rain problem that everyone faces today demonstrates one thing in particular, and that is, finding new means and approaches that will enable us to defend and protect ourselves, as well as the environment, from the continuous destruction and devastation caused by acid rain. Acid is no longer just an aberration that resulted from the choice of civilization (Yadav, 2012). Everyone can no longer deny the fact that the effects of acid rain had become more than what the world can handle. Over the past years and decades, the acid deposition had grown significantly and has become one of the primary subjects being studied by various scientists and researchers across the globe.…

Introduction Photosynthesis is the process in which light energy is converted into chemical energy in plants and other organisms (Reece, 2011). Photosynthesis is a redox reaction where carbon dioxide is reduced to sugar (glucose) and water is oxidized to oxygen (Reece, 2011). The reaction that occurs during photosynthesis is shown through the empirical equation CO2 + H2O → (CH2O)N + O2 (Stegenga, 2015). Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells, specifically within the thylakoid and the stroma (Stegenga, 2015).…

These researchers investigate the effect of synthesized acid rain and fir and pine (McColl and Johnson 125). The researchers discovered that when the synthesized acid rain reached pH levels below 2.0, there were significant reductions in the germination of such plants (McColl and Johnson 127). Additionally, some of the germination rates in certain firs and pines were reduced by up to 32 percent (McColl and Johnson 125). Also, there were related problems to the plants that were exposed to the acid rain with pH levels below 2.0. The plants appeared to have problems absorbing and utilizing the water, making many of the plants wilt, dry up, and even die (McColl and Johnson…
