Achtheres Research Paper

Decent Essays
Have you seen parasites in the mouths of striped bass you have caught on Lake Lanier? What you are seeing is most likely a parasitic copepod of the genus Achtheres.
Achtheres is a parasitic copepod that infects the gills of freshwater fish and is most easily visible once they mature and move into the fish’s mouth. For those that haven’t seen them, mature adults resemble a small white dot (less than 1/8”) with what look like legs. Those ‘legs’ are actually the egg sacs of the female parasite which are in the last stage of their life cycle.
Despite being unattractive, there is little cause for alarm. These parasites have not directly caused a fish kill in the waters where they have been found, and are harmless to humans since they are not found

The species I chose was Pterois volitans, which is commonly known as a lionfish or red lionfish. They are characterized by alternating white and red/brown stripes and contain venomous spines all over the body. Lionfish can grow up to 18.5 inches in length and are a species native to the Indo-Pacific region. Economically speaking lionfish are not regularly used in the seafood business, but are a huge part of the aquarium trade (Robbins). Due to the spines described above, there does not seem to be a predator that feeds on these fish in the Atlantic Ocean.…
