Analysis of Achilles We can analyze Achilles’s characters through two fits of rages of Achilles. At the beginning of The Iliad, “Rage-goddess, sing the rage of Peleus’s son Achilles.” (The Iliad book 1 pg.5) From the word “rage”, we can know that Achilles’s character is very sensitive, especially in person’s dignity and honor. Achilles didn’t let anyone violate his honor. From the first anger of Achilles, we can notice that Achilles didn’t have the concept of class. He ignored authority and king. He kept his own principle. Because Agamemnon captured the daughter of Apollo and didn’t want to give her back. Because of this behavior, plague appeared between Achaean army. (The Iliad Book 1 pg.6) After that, Achilles ask Agamemnon to free Apollo’s daughter, but Agamemnon took Briseis away from Achilles. This behavior made Achilles angry, and Achilles exited the war. His quit brought lots of damage to Achaean, and finally caused the death of Patroclus. According to this behavior, we can say that Achilles is selfish like normal people. Achilles lost his mind because of his own benefit. At this time, the only thing he worried about is his honor and his woman. This isn’t an act of hero. Compare to Achilles, I think Hector is a hero. Different from Achilles, Hector put national benefit in the first place. Hector fight in the battleground for his country and his citizens. In my point of view, Achilles only fight for several friends and his family. In another hand, Hector also respected all his opponent on the battleground, Hector promise if he killed his opponent, he would send the body back to Achaean’s ship and let Archaean to hold an honorable funeral.
