Achilles: A Complex Character In The Iliad

To create a realistic character an author will make their characters complex. A complex character is a character that holds more than one dimension he or she will act differently in different situations. Homer the author of the Iliad does a good job of this with his character Achilles. Achilles is a complex character because because he has multiple conflicting motivations. Two traits that conflict are disrespectful and respectful. Achilles shows disrespect to hector when he says says “Beg me no beggary by soul or parents, whining dog!”. Hector is asking for achilles to give his body back to his parents. Later on in the story achilles encounters Hector's father Priam and shows respect by giving his body back.
