Achieving College Degrees

Rene, I'm also very grateful for the many resources that are available for today's students, if it wasn't for scholarships and other aids my family would have a very difficult time putting two adults through college at the same time, and since having a college degree is almost necessary to get most good jobs it makes it all the more important, although, there are some cases where experience definitely qualifies someone more than just a degree would.

Do you believe there is a benefit to earning a post-secondary degree? Post-secondary degrees have been around since before America declared independence from Great Britain in 1776. People have always had to go to college to earn a post-secondary degree. Also, colleges today are so expensive because in the 1700’s only rich families could afford to send their kids to college, so the prices of college have not gone down since then. Earning a post-secondary degree will have a positive impact on somebody’s life because there will be more job opportunities, higher incomes, and a longer life expectancy.…

The Value and Purpose of Postsecondary Degrees Students of for-profit colleges are only 11% of America’s higher education population yet they account for 44% of federal student loan defaults because the value of their degree makes them the least desirable to be hired by employers (Harvard Law Review, 2015). This is also a product of aggressive recruiting techniques that target military members by offering a fast, convenient path towards an accredited degree. As it turns out, a degree awarded from a for-profit or “degree mill” university has no more value in the civilian world than a high school diploma and these businesses continue to capitalize on enlisted Sailor’s dreams of furthering their education. Being in my last year of high school I have begun to think about what goals I want to accomplish during college or after college. I have come to a conclusion that after college I would like to obtain my doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine and start a family. After college I would love to get my doctorate because I enjoy helping animals and their owners. Growing up I have always had a soft spot for animals in my heart, but by majoring in wildlife sciences, it will allow me to come out of my shell and take a different path from just dogs and cats. Also by majoring in this department, I hope to encounter different cultural backgrounds so that I can grow culturally and learn about others while helping them with whatever struggles they…

I believe a student in the job market will show his or her abilities during an interview and on the job task. McArdle’s statement “College graduates now make 80 percent more than people who have only a high-school diploma” (25) contradicts his questionable doubt of college worth.…

The decision to obtain my degree is one that has given me much pride, however the decision I made to leave a great job (that I enjoyed very much), pack up and leave my home to pursue a position within my degree field has been one of much regret. It has taken almost a year, 100+ resumes, and 3 interviews for me to receive an explanation. All of my work that I did with historic preservation along with being elected by the great citizens of Black Hawk and Central City to the sanitation district board was in vain. Those experiences has been all for not and has been discarded as nonexistent. Therefore I have come to the conclusion that I chose a path that was the best for me due to the nature of my degree and my passion for public service however,…

My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…
