Acetophenone (0.01 mol) and aromatic aldehyde (0.01 mol) were stirred in ethanol (10-20 ml) for 2 h and 10 ml of 40% sodium hydroxide solution was added to it. The mixture was kept overnight at room temperature. The contents were then poured on crushed ice and acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid. The precipitated crude product was filtered, dried and recrystallized from ethanol. The chalcones (0.01 mol, synthesized above), thiourea (0.01 mol) and potassium hydroxide (0.017 mol) in ethanol (20 ml) were refluxed for 3-4 h. The reaction mixture was then poured on ice and the precipitated solid was collected and recrystallized from ethanol.
