The author wrote “eyes that have forgotten how to see,” (5) after the first section of the poem to depict that we have only been looking at the world one way and as we have been doing so for such a long time, we no longer look for another way. This creates a pattern of life that the poet wants us to rid ourselves of. He believes that society has morphed itself to fit the general idea, the popular idea. His diction gives the idea that your words will flourish on their own, even if different from the mold people share. Dana Gioia only used one simile in this poem.…

At the end of the story, the narrator describes a glass of milk and scotch that he had ordered for his brother as shaking above his head on the piano “like the very cup of trembling” (p. 61) and bathed in blue light to illustrate the difficult position Sonny is in. This phrase is originally form the bible, where it is used as a symbol to depict the suffering that his people has gone through and God tells his people that they will no longer have to drink from that cup. So, the imagery of this cup brings with it a promise of release from suffering. When Sonny drinks from this cup after performing, it is a reminder of the suffering he has endured, while showing that he has a chance for salvation, like he has begun to find through his music. All the while, this cup is bathed in blue light, a mixture of light and dark, of salvation and desolation.…

James uses the darkness by allowing for the mezzotint’s changes to either take place or be discovered late in the evening or in the night-time, this is mirrored in “Oh Whistle” where the weather is described as “bleak and solemn” and everything is “too late and too dark”. Cavallaro asserts that darkness is usually associated with menace and fear and “[l]onely spots in the grip of forbidding northern winters, preferably in the dead of night, are elements of a well-known matrix” of gothic settings (2002, 21f). The eeriness of James’s atmosphere is frequently interrupted by incidents that occur during daylight. This could be used as an effective contrast between light and dark and instil a greater sense of fear in the reader. However, the harmless activities that occur during the light such as breakfast chat and games such as cards create a safe and unalarming atmosphere.…

He states that desire has tried to pursue him “in vain” because no matter how hard it tried, the speaker no longer let it provoke him. He expresses that it has “taught” him a “better lesson” to only look within himself instead of looking around at others. Unfortunately his realization resulted in that he has the intention to “kill desire.” He wishes to destroy the thing that has caused him so much pain and made him an imbecile. This creates an ironic tone because throughout the poem he speaks of desire as such a sinister entity and explains how it can “mangle” one’s mind and make someone a “fool;” although, he recognizes its consequences, the speaker can not escape its aggressive clutch.…
