“Why I Chose Southwest” As a homeschooled high school senior, I am unable to take Advanced Placement courses, which are college-level classes taken at a high school. Students earn college credits by taking an exam at the end of the year. To remedy this, I decided to register at Southwest Tennessee Community College for dual enrollment classes. I chose Southwest for a multitude of reasons: to complete my high school education, to provide challenging courses in preparation for college, and to grant me college credit. I opted to take Pre Calculus, English Composition, and Anatomy & Physiology this semester.…
Somehow, I managed to trick my parents into believing I was good in math. I never wanted them to know I couldn’t even solve a basic subtraction problem, so I kept lying about my grades. It was extremely hard for me to keep up the act, but I was totally convinced there was nothing I could do. I wasn’t good at math when I was younger, how could I be good at it now? Overtime, I had forgotten most of my multiplication facts, and subtraction gave me a headache.…
A Hero's Journey The last month of summer before my junior year started was occupied with pondering and wondering what I wanted to accomplish during the upcoming school year. Sure, junior year sounds like a blast, filled with fun memories and friends. But it also doubles as approaching the cliff of adulthood that I would hit in two short years. Every step I take my junior and senior year will be one step closer to that ledge.…
How does race affect the student’s experience of an AP class? Introduction Our high school years are some of the most delicate in our lives and they are also a time in which we develop the most as people. Every day we are surrounded by hundreds of students and teachers wandering the halls of our schools and communities challenging themselves to achieve a better future.…
and I was mentally exhausted from all the work I had put in. I was very thankful that my teacher helped me succeed. I worked with him and did a lot of extra work, and studied incredibly hard, and within 4 weeks, I was able to raise my grade 11%. This was the class I had always been terrified about. I didn’t think I could do it, because in the past science hadn’t been my strong suit.…
Was the no “child left behind act” of 2002 a lawful decision of congress? Namely this act required that schools administer yearly math and language test to students in grades one through twelve (NewYorkTimes). These tests are used to observe students intelligence. Furthermore they can help the government establish the correct amount of funding a school receives. Standardized tests have a negative impact on society.…
My heart pounded. My knees shook. I feared the other twenty students sitting around me could hear my heart leaping out of my chest as I read each question on the SAT. When I looked around the room, I realized they all had the same look of terror on their faces as I did. This test determined the rest of our futures; whether we’d get into the college of our dreams or not.…
“Melissa, levantate rapido” that translates to Melissa you have 5 seconds to get up, and be ready or you will feel the wrath of The Chancla (a weapon used from all Hispanic mother’s to demonstrate authority.) Ten seconds after shouting at the top of her lungs for me to get up, my mother begins her day as she always does, providing my father, younger siblings and I with a meal. Which usually consists of the crispy black goya beans and medium sized white eggs all wrapped in a soft warm corn tortilla, I was thirteen when my mom was seven months pregnant, nearly fainted from exhaustion from cleaning houses, but it was not an option, my father's income was just not sufficient enough to support three children and an incoming one. It was at…
The College admission process requires high emphasis on ACT and SAT scores, but these don’t accurately reflect student academic performance and should be abolished. Many officials debate whether we can remove these tests completely. While some experts urge the SAT and ACT as necessary requirements, they can remove to increase academic performance. Because these tests require extensive preparation, college admissions are a hectic process. Since, a student’s future disappears from college reality we should consider alternative results.…
Standardized Tests How many countless hours have teachers and kids struggled over ACT packets and practice SAT’s for a mere three hours of filling in bubbles? President Barack Obama said, “teachers should not be forced to spend the academic year preparing students to fill in bubbles on standardized tests.” In high schools all over the U.S. teachers prepare student for these impractical tests, to measure how smart someone is. These standardized tests, however, don’t take into account many other things such as work ethic, willingness to be involved, and student’s effort.…
The SAT “is a sternly worded dinosaur of a test, graded in an arbitrary manner with outdated equipment…the only reason people take it is because they have to.” Children begin taking standardized tests in pre-kindergarten and by the time they are high school seniors, they’ve taken an average of 112 standardized tests (Strauss 1), all with one purpose: to measure and quantify intellectual ability. However, there is a growing mountain of evidence that suggests the SAT is a poor measurement of potential college success. The SAT is regarded as one of the more important tests, as it is used primarily to measure a student’s potential college success. For high school students the SAT is the gatekeeper of the future.…
Three years into my high school I hadn't gotten into the state of mind that most over achievers have. I had floated through high school thinking I was trying my very hardest to get good grades and become a consistently studious candidate of my school. However, no matter how hard I tried I failed I gave into all the distractions and used all my obstacles as excuses became frustrated and developed an attitude problem that I had created myself. Being a consistent 2.5 student wasn't satisfying or inspiring. Uniquely enough, I had decided to take challenging courses my junior year.…
Back to School, Really! Returning to school might just be a great place to begin my story. We all know that acquiring an education can be a scary experience, especially if you are approaching 50 years old. Therefore, when I made the decision to return to school, I knew it very well might be the hardest decision that I would ever have to make. I dreamed about this place, about campus life, or if it was too late for me to consider the notion.…
