Personal Narrative: Multi-Color Internship

At the beginning of this journey I thought majoring in accounting would be the perfect major for me. Therefore interning at Multi-Color Corporation, I thought would be the perfect opportunity. Multi-Color is a label company that prints over 10 million labels a day. There are over 45 different plants all around the world and the Scottsburg plant usually produces the most sales. The accounting department basically keeps the company running. Without the accounting department bills would not get paid or bills would not get mailed out for the customers to pay. At Multi-Color there are four main accountants: Accounts Payable (Melissa Campbell), Accounts Receivable (Tiffany Lowe), Cost Accountant (Jeremy Hafer), and Accounting Coordinator (Shari Schmidt). Some of the tasks we decided would be good for me to do at the beginning of my internship would be to learn the AP Process, AR Process, Job Cost Process, and lastly learn how to close jobs. For example, the things I learned in my accounting class were very useful. Learning about debits and credits really helped going into my internship. Throughout my accounting class, one thing my teacher always said was, “accounting in a classroom is different than accounting in a business”. After having my internship I really see that now. Today since we have so much technology the computers do a lot of the accounting side of things. For instance, a company no longer has to fill out a journal, the computer fills out everything for them. Another class that really helped me throughout my internship was preparing for college and careers was a big advantage. While I may not have used many of the skills for actual accounting it helped to know how I should act in a workplace

I probably took a good two day to figure out how to use a conference phone and an industrial copier. Lucky, UMSL prepared me for the mass amount of work I had to do in Microsoft Excel. I was even able to show my supervisor and other coworkers how to do a number of useful functions on the spreadsheets. A set of skills that I knew I was pretty good at and was eager to apply to the internship was my organizational and time management skills. After that I started my PhD program and for four and half year during which I was teaching in the accounting department. The best part of all these years of personal development and teaching was that I was on both sided of the classroom, as a teacher and a student, which helped me fine tune the wants and needs of students and also refine my teaching and presentation skills to better address and audience. Even though teaching was a priority, it was not the first on the list, as I was more into finishing my degrees and progress in my academic career, which is why teaching at Towson University is a whole new chapter and for the first time teaching is my full time job and number one…

However, just like Ms. Chen mentioned in class, this class is about business and professional…
