Ranging from commercials, newspapers, movies, and magazines, advertisements are one of the top most prominent things that society gets bombarded with on a daily basis. The problem that many individuals including myself is that we fall victim to the manipulation of the advertising sharks and their devious tricks. In the article ‘Advertising’s 15 Basic Appeals’ by Jib Fowles, the author portrays how advertisers use 15 basic emotional appeals, both conscious and primitive in order to get you to say ‘I want and need that!’ In National Geographic, a historical, anthropological, discovery-based magazine, advertisers focus their energy on the middle-aged, middle-class, educated audience, who want to improve their intellectual integrity, but also improve…
1) The discourse community I chose to study was Political Science, as it follows my major of Law and Constitutional Studies. 2) My discourse community communicates via email, research journals, face to face and through the American Political Science Associations various pages, for example, on the internet and through Facebook. 3) Professor Sharp polled his colleagues in the Political science department prior to our interview. He reports that they use writing at least 50% of their time. When Professor Sharp was employed by the State Department he wrote every day and he said, “You better do it well!”…

Strategies: Argumentation: “The more often older adults were told that a given claim was false, the more likely they were to accept it as true after several days have passed.” Questions: Argumentation: The author of this article uses this technique to refer back to social experiments done in the past to prove his point about why many Trump supporters don’t see why some of Trump’s ideas are necessarily good nor beneficial to the country.…
The in the article, “Paradoxical Effects of Thought Suppression” researchers explored the hypothesis that thought suppression is difficult for people to do and that suppressed thoughts can return to consciousness with minimal prompting, perhaps becoming obsessive preoccupations (Wegner, 1987.) To explore this, they conducted two experiments where they asked subjects to verbalize their stream of consciousness for 5 minute periods, asked subject groups to alternatively express or suppress thoughts of a “white bear”, and record occurrences of “white bear” thoughts during each period via verbal mentions or bell rings. Researchers found that thought suppression attempts resulted in a rebound effect that was especially pronounced when subjects were…

Journal Entry 6 I observed: This session had quite a lot of things to be observed. Some of these include the flow of the session i.e. the session had a very few pauses and went very well when members talked about what they were going through. I observed that a few of the members did not have a good eye contact. This occurred when the member tried to explain a situation.…
Journal #3 After taking the inventory my Mom received a high context score of 29 and a low context score of 38 with a difference of nine. I received a high context score of 32 and a low context score of 39 with a difference of seven. We are very similar in our low context scores and pretty similar in our high context scores. After discussing our results and what they mean, we decided that we definitely are more direct when talking and we aren't as likely to pick up on things like emotional tone or verbal cues. While we were discussing high context versus low context, we both connected on having a hard time thinking of nonverbal cues and how they come into conversations.…
Prejudice is a hostile or negative attitude toward people in a separate group, due to their membership in that group (Aronson, Wilson & Akert, 2013). It has been with humanity since a long time ago, but it is only recently, within the 20th and 21st centuries that prejudice has surfaced more than ever, especially regarding the stereotypes of gender, to serve the rights of humans. Even recently, there have been news that were published in regards to prejudice and discrimination. The first news article concerns the shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, in the United States, by another police officer because Rice ‘failed to obey an order to raise his hands’ after being caught pulling out a replica gun, which lacked of an orange safety indicator,…

1. In business, whether a follower or leader, it is important to listen and interpret the message a sender is trying to send. Nonverbal cues are helpful when interpreting a message in a face-to- face conversation, feelings may be expressed through the “speaker’s loudness, tone of voice, pace of speech, as well as watching the speaker’s facial expressions, posture, gestures and so on” (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy, p. 290). Various examples of nonverbal cues were presented in the video that could be beneficial in interacting with colleagues, competitors and clients. For example, in the video Joey uses strong eye contact to convey trustworthiness.…

In face-to-face interactions, our style of communication includes both verbal and nonverbal cues. Author, B. Strong (2014), reports: “Even when you are not talking, you communicate by your silence (e.g., an awkward silence, a hostile silence, or a tender silence) (Strong, 2014, p. 232).” On the other hand, phone conversations, online and electronic interactions are restricted only to verbal communication through written words.…
