Doing Gender

“Hey baby, how you doin’?” This can be a words woman appeal to, but only if it’s coming from their significant other. Most of the time women in big cities hear these statements, it’s from a complete stranger. This is scary to most of the women who have to endure this type of verbal abuse. They are unable to realize what these catcallers consider to be a compliment from a threat to their personal space and peace of mind. Men try to show their power and use catcalling as a way to show masculinity which comes at the expense of women. When a woman feels some type of harm or way from such behavior, it is called doing gender, according to Messerschmidt. Catcalling obviously falls under that category because most women feel uncomfortable

“While the standard polarization of human being in a crime story is normally dividing by the law abiding citizens from the criminal, the characters here are soon divided on the basis of sex differences.” (Alkalay) In Susan Glaspell’s “Trifles” Glaspell uses a murder investigation of a woman’s husband to demonstrate the different roles of men and women in the early 1900’s. Glaspell shows the reader, through small significant objects that the men think are inessential to illustrate the greater value women have other than merely taking care of a household. She illustrates through important evidence the importance of individuality, and freedom between men and women.…

In society, more often than not, individuals are expected to uphold a certain appearance and image of themselves; men are supposed to act masculine, while women are pressured to act in a feminine manner. These expectations extend to social class systems as well; the rich and upper middle class families are always expected to accomplish greatness, while lower class families are not believed to achieve anything of value in their lifetime. If these societal values are challenged, the offender will be outcasted from society. Which eventually causes individuals to give up on identity formation and conform to societal expectations. Similarly, Karen Ho and Susan Faludi, authors of “Biographies of Hegemony” and “The Naked Citadel”, discuss the formation…

We can see that within a family, it is structured to influence each other and see things as normal, and people outside of the immediate family cannot intervene because it is a personal affair. In a book written by Mirande, Mirande goes into his family life and recalls being in Tacuba where it was a small community, but what stood out to him is that he recalls a lot of commotion and the entire neighborhood gathering around his Tío Roberto’s house where there was yelling and screaming—his uncle was drunk and beating his Tía Adriana; Mirande brings up the fact that it is very unusual that another household to intervene in the private affairs of another (Mirande). In a Latino culture, often people will not intervene in personal affairs, which gives males more dominance and control over any situation because nobody is confronting them in defense of the woman. “I find that, for men, breadwinning increases infidelity. For women, breadwinning decreases infidelity.…

Deborah Tannens essay “Sex, Lies and Conversation: Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk To Each Other?” offers many explanations as to why men and women converse differently. Tannen concluded from her own research that the linguistic differences, body language, and silence in opposing settings have an equal contribution as to why the genders communicate differently among groups of all the same gender and groups of opposing gender. While women often add their input on a situation men find that as being a challenge of their dominance. Tannen effectively demonstrates the riff between the genders through the use of childhood experiences, and showing how younger experiences shape adult communication behaviors. Men and women have very different…

Throughout history race and gender have been closely intertwined in the construction of both black and white women’s bodies alike. The female body being viewed as natural, the medicalizing of the female body, and advertising the ideal beauty are concepts that have been embedded in Western thinking for many years. These three theories show the interaction between gender and race in the construction of thoughts concerning, and the interpretation of, the woman’s body. Minimum wage legislation for women and children in the District of Columbia was passed by Congress in 1918. Five years later, the wage board of Children’s Hospital in Washington D.C. cut the hours of many of the employees, who were primarily women, to counteract the extra money that they would have to pay their employees due to the legislation. Many of the employees saw that the wage board’s enforcement of the 1918 legislation was not benefitting them as intended because overall, they would each be paid less overall due to the decrease in working hours. The case was brought to the Supreme Court by Children’s Hospital and a female employee hoping to stop the enforcement of the act by Jesse C. Adkins and the wage board. The Supreme Court ruled…

Women can say “bitches” in reference to her friends, say “sexy bitch” in a positive connotation, but despite anyone’s intentions, putting this word into the air makes men think it is acceptable to throw it around in their daily conversations.
