What is Access Family Care you may wonder? Access is a community-based organization that provides preventive and primary care services to all persons in need, regardless of financial situations. Their mission is to provide primary healthcare to underserved, underinsured, and uninsured Americans. By doing so, Access Family Care is considered an FQHC, and receives federal funding based on their services. These services include health, dental, mental, and substance abuse, and are currently provided though six different facility locations in Missouri. Access Family Care began in 1995, when diminishing state funding for health programs began causing concerns for the Department of Health Administrators of Barry, McDonald, and Newton counties. Due to these concerns, a grant proposal was designed and would provide health care for all residents of these counties dispite income, ethnicity, and insurance status. This grant and a subsequent grant led to implementation of a Federally Qualified Health Center status that was fully achieved in 1999. Being able to view the functionality of an electronic health record in person proved to be a great insight. At Access, Centricity is used for all health records and Dentrix for dental records. These systems begin when a patient is seen for registration. Insurance and benefit eligibility is then determined as the patient record is created. From here, a patient is scheduled into these systems and seen by a chosen provider. Once seen, the physicians enter a diagnosis and procedures into the health record. When this diagnosis and/ or procedure is entered, an ICD-9, ICD-10, and/ or CPT code is assigned automatically. It is up to the providers to ensure the most specific diagnosis is chosen for accurate
