Accepting A Psychopath

Meryl Streep once said, “The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy”, but what if a human does not bare that ‘gift’? It is fascinating that this gift of empathy that most of the population possesses and uses to understand each other could not be present in someone . A psychopath is the term used in society to label people who lack empathy. It is a mental disorder that is among the hardest ones to distinguish. According to Dr.Hare Psychopaths display “use of deceit and deception to cheat, con, or defraud others for personal gain”. This ability to manipulate other people can become easier over time for a psychopath. In James Fallon’s experiences, “The pranks and manipulations and party mayhem got riskier and would involve tens and hundreds of others as I got older”. Tens and hundreds could turn into thousands and escalate even further. If one person could manipulate that many people, people could see them as a great leader. The scariest part in this situation would be that psychopaths are only out for their own gain, and because they lack empathy they don’t see the problem in it. So having a psychopath as a leader of a country could potentially be devastating to the whole world. Some people have the ability to see through this facade, and other people eventually see through it, but when it is too late. It is too late for Detective Ryan in the case of Rosalind Devlin. Once the realization comes to him he describes, “ for the first time I saw in starkly allegorical relief how ugly she was, without the layered makeup and the artfully tumbling ringlets:pouched cheeks, thin avid mouth pursed into a hateful smirk, eyes as glassy and empty as a doll’s”(French, 403). The main character nor the reader could see that throughout the entire book Rosalind had been manipulating him. If a psychopathic leader gains power, and the people do not recognize it early enough this ‘great leader’ could cause a genocide, or another war. And he would not care as long as he gains from

`Psychopathic personality' was once widely used but was superseded by `sociopathic personality' to indicate the social aspects of the disorder, but now `antisocial personality disorder' is the preferred term. The term psychopath is commonly used incorrectly in the media to describe someone who has done something considered “evil.” Terrorists, mass killers and bombers often get labeled with this term before anyone has caught them, let alone had time to make an assessment of them. It’s become shorthand for people who do terrible things, and that disconnect from the reality of the situation is a problem in the way we view people and their actions. By labeling someone a psychopath, it’s easy to write them off as evil and never look at the actual factors that go into their actions.…
