Acceptance In The Film Glory

Acceptance is defined as the action of consenting to receive or undertake something offered. But in this movie, acceptance is so much more than that. Acceptance is the 54th regiment walking down to battle at Fort Wagner and getting cheered on by the other white regiments. Acceptance is the 54th regiment accepting Trip and being like family. Acceptance is everything in this movie. In this movie acceptance is given from others, and it is given by yourself, called self-respect. Self-Respect and acceptance are the main themes of Glory. The first form of acceptance in this film is from the troops accepting Colonel Shaw. The 54th regiment is an all- black regiment, yet they accept Colonel Shaw as their leader, a white man. In the movie, all the troops accept Shaw as their leader and they trust him. Although many don’t believe in the cause of fighting, they still trust and accept Shaw. Another example of acceptance in the film is the troops of the 54th regiment getting accepting by the troops of the other regiments. At the beginning of the film, nobody respects the 54th regiment and when the 54th runs into another regiment of whites, they almost fight. This is shown when they are all gathered around and signing the night before the battle at Fort Wagner and Trip gets up and gives a speech. He talks about how the 54th is the only family he’s got. It was a very touching and emotional moment in the film but it really demonstrated acceptance. Another acceptance that happened during the song was Thomas accepting the culture of the 54th regiment.
