I think when Shahrzad shows empathy towards Khalid it is some of the first steps towards the big change to come. It's almost as if the author is giving us bread crumbs to follow. These small words and actions are patches of the quilt which will cover Khorasan in peace and tranquility finally.
To achieve peace and a better Khorasan, both of the main characters must be able to forgive themselves and each other first by letting go of the past and accepting all that has passed. At times forgiveness is like a quilt. Sometimes the process of forgiveness is a gradual one, but eventually leads us to something greater than we started out with. We've all been in situations like Shahrzad and Khalid. I think this book gives the reader a piece of advice for the future. Perhaps if we learn from Khalid and Shahrzad's mistakes we can avoid all the painful events that took place before the happy
