Over the years, nursing has become a growing field. There has been talk since I can remember in high school about the shortage of nursing. The field is requiring more nurses as previous nurses are retiring and a variety of field’s are expanding. The shortage is still seen today, it is thought the nursing shortage will become more serious within 10 years (Ellis & Hartley, 2012, P.33). The populations of people who are a nurse now plan to retire within the next ten years. The overall aspect of an accelerated nursing program is the quicker route in order to practice a nurse. The demands of the accelerated program require more than that of a traditional bachelor program. This program was designed to increase the rate of nurses in the field at a faster rate in order to replenish the shortage of nurses now and in the future. The requirement for one to apply for the accelerated nursing program requires a previous undergraduate degree. The program does contain its pros and cons; it just comes down to the individual if they are willing to tackle the …show more content…
The positive outcome is allowing one individual who already has a previous bachelor degree to practice as a nurse sooner than one who followed a traditional route. It has been researched individual’s who attended the accelerated nursing program passed with a higher rate on the licensure exam then one who did a traditional route. According to the Journal of Professional Nursing (2013) stated “compared traditional and accelerates student success on the NCLEX-RN and found that accelerated students had a higher pass rate (92.3% vs. (89.5%)” (29, 6, p.395-401). The overall aspect of the accelerated nursing program may appeal to some individual’s but not all. It takes a person who is dedicated to accept the high demand the program will have on them.
