Accelerate Dance Concert

The Accelerate dance concert is a modern dance concert presented by the Theater and Dance administrations at the University of Kentucky. The concert consisted of three performances in the month of January. On Saturday January 27th I attended the 7:30 pm Accelerate dance concert in the Guignol Theater in the Fine Arts building on campus. While I have attended dance concerts in my past, both live and through videos, this was the first time I have seen modern dance in person. Currently I am enrolled in several dance classes at my university. In each class following the concert we spent time discussing and sharing our opinions on each piece. After discussing with my peers each work of art I have formed my own opinions that may not agree with each of theirs, however when it comes to modern dance I understand that everyones interpretation may vary. One of my favorite dances was entitled, “Deflated Queens”. This piece was choreographed by Anthony Alterio, who is referred to in the program as “trash”. He choreographed this dance to a live recording of Proud Mary sang by Tina Turner. Anthony also had help from Karen …show more content…
My main complaint with the Deflated Queens piece was that the choreography included many different styles of dance. I observed jazz techniques demonstrated through the dancers jazz hands as well as aspects of ballet demonstrated through the dancers pirouettes. These two different styles of dance would also explain why during certain portions of the dance performers had their feet pointed while at other moments feet appeared to be relaxed or flexed. The combination of many styles created difficult choreography. I believe the dancers did not execute this combination as well as the five other pieces that were included in the dance concert, because the dance still seemed sloppy and uncleaned, and I struggled to tell if some of the moves were intentional or

All I can say is, the story had somewhat of a quicker pace and sometimes harder to follow and small details could easily be missed, and the lighting was a tiny bit distracting when it flashed across the stage quickly. The use of sound effects was used to signify different things that caught the attention of the viewers and really added a special touch to the play. The play showcased beautiful and stunning singing which made the play more authentic, combined with the elaborate dances numbers truly made the show breathtaking and…

The two clips I chose to compare and contrast were an NYC jazz and contemporary company’s performance of “Steam Heat” choreographed by Lisa Donmall-Reeve and Lindsey’s Stirling’s performance of a Les Miserables medley. Both clips exhibited a high degree of musicality and grabbed my attention almost immediately. They incorporated lighting and costuming with an incredible mastery to enrich the performance. I highly enjoyed the music that accompanied both dances and thought that the choreography worked well with the music. While both works of art have incredibly interesting and complex choreographic elements there are important dissimilarities as well as points of comparison.…

If a dance piece does not look good to the audiences, then the audiences would think that the dance piece is not valuable and unattractive. Additionally, that kind of thought could be dangerous for the future of art because an art piece should not only be judge only its appearance. But it should also be judge by the cultural meaning behind…

How to describe energy in the world? Some may not have words, but experience. Experience through such things as dance that evoke and create energetic environments through movements, music, and others. Though this is not always the case, it was at the Dionysios Dancer’s charitable performance of the Pentozali at the Greek Orthodox Church located in Salt Lake City, Utah. In which I was surprisingly entertained and intrigued by the culture and experience within the dancing.…

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting the exhibit Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes, 1909-1929: When Art Danced with Music at the National Gallery of Art. But this was not my first experience with this exhibit, no for I had the opportunity to perform in honor of this exhibit this past summer where I performed right outside the entrance the to the showcase. I performed the roles of the Faun in Vaslav Nijinsky’s Afternoon of a Faun, and Prince Ivan in The Firebird.…

Although there was a large amount of ‘controversy’ beforehand, what is the point of doing contemporary art without bringing up contemporary problems? As an avid satirical reader myself, I found this musical to be quite humorous and yet still connect with the audience on these contemporary problems. After seeing the musical numerous times, I released just how little controversial material was actually in the show, all it was doing was portraying life, at least semi-accurately, from the perspective of a recent college graduate. Both its humor and social commentary amused me, along with its excellent set and costume design and musical numbers, helped it earn an 8.5/10 from…

The tempo was medium/slow and the style was Latin/Salsa. The song included a cha cha beat, an improvised solo by Peter, who was scat singing, and a drum solo. This song was pretty fun, not only was the tempo upbeat but the audience also played a part in the performance by adding in syncopation. The last song Richland High played is called Love Makes the World go Round by The Ritz. The tempo was a medium/slow and there was numerous solos.…

“Classical Fantasy” choreographed by Jerry Opdenaker, restaged and danced by Ciera Fielding, was a beautifully done piece because of it’s nod to classical ballet. The reference to classical ballet was due to both the musical choice of a composed piece lacking lyrics, and purely instrumental, as well as her outfit that consisted of a tutu, her ballet shoes with the boxed toe to allow her to go fully on point, and lastly due to her perfection of the aplomb. In this piece Ms. Fielding used indirect space by taking command of the entire floor as she pirouetted from each space to transition into the next move. While her body was very upright, and she often spun on toe, her sense of weight was light weight. It was almost like she was floating gracefully across the stage, which created a fluid effect to her sudden sense of time.…

It was choreographed by Brooke Cherry. Dancers, ages around 9 10, were wearing blue dresses with white polkadots and as a prompt everyone had a broom. At the beginning one by one started popping out and standing up as they were all down on the floor before the music started. Movement was very synchronized which means that all girls were doing the same thing. The name of the dance “Dear Future Husband” was the name of the song used for this performance.…

Being able to choreograph and perform in dance concert is a very unique and amazing experience. Creating ideas with everyone around you and transforming those ideas into a masterpiece is a process like no other. With everyone’s opinions out in thin air, you can put all of your ideas into one to create something so beautiful. In Modern especially it was really intriguing to watch the whole process of how the dance was created. Since we did originally have a combo to go off of, it was different watching all the different groups create a combo over the steps but just in a different format.…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

My mood was jubilant that day because I was glad I came to that performance instead of staying home. I would have felt home sick with all that final review so it was pleasant and peaceful having entertainment for such a low cost but great performance. The movements I identified were a lot of the terms I went over in dance class from degage to grand battement, the list goes all over. The name of the performance should be called “The Art of Adventure” and it should be divided into subgenres which focuses on the main theme adventure. Adventure can be dim or bright but they always seem to have a long lasting well produced ending.…
