Maine was a district of the state of Massachusetts until it became the 23rd state on March 15th, 1820 as part of the Missouri compromise (Hartford, 2006). Maine got its name because it was distinguished as the Mainland from islands offshore (History.com Staff, 2009). It is also known as the Pine Tree State. Maine is the only state whose name is a single syllable and is abbreviated as ME on maps. The state borders New Hampshire, the Atlantic Ocean, and some provinces of Canada. Maine’s original capital was Portland but it is now Augusta. The most recent population of Maine was 1,330,089 as of 2014 on Wikipedia (2015). This makes being outdoors very popular. One of the most popular parks is Acadia National Park. Acadia has been around since 1604 but was created as a park 1919. It was originally named Lafayette National Park but it was changed to Acadia National Park in 1929 (Hartford, 2006). Before the park was founded by George B. Dorr and Charles W. Elliot it was according to acadia-national-park.org, inhibited by the Native America Wabanaki tribe for more than 12,000 years (n.d.). According to Acadia-national-park .org the trails were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps which is also known as the CCC. During the Great Depression no one had jobs, and Dorr saw the chance to put 275,000 men to work beginning in 1933. The men were provided three meals a day and $25 a month to create the trails. Acadia National Park is 47,748 acres and there are a total of 26 mountains.(n.d.) Seven of those mountains are over 1000 feet! There are also over 2 million visitors per year. Most people don’t know that Acadia is a park that is filled with parks.
