The objective of this course was to examine current research on academic success and the diversity in schools. As a participant of this course, I also gained knowledge of how encouraging academic and social growth stems from building relationships and creating a supportive environment that fosters resiliency and strength in my students. Proposition 1: Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
Indicator 1b: Teachers treat students equitably and with dignity. They recognize the individual differences, and they account for these differences in practice.
Indicator 1c: Teachers understand how students develop and learn.
Indicator 1d: Teachers respect the cultural and family differences students bring to the classroom.
In looking at the definition of achievement gap most teachers say it is cultural, but I learned that there is also a gap based on race. A veil was lifted from my eyes when I was asked what percentage of my interaction was with people of a race. I had written10% on my paper, but then it was made clear that white is also a race. I found it to be very thought provoking and I am embarrassed to say that I had not considered white to be a race. Maybe because it was not addressed as other races were when I went to school. I questioned whether people of other races do the same thing with their own race. Race can be confusing to students at times too, depending on what their prior knowledge is.
