I am writing to apply for the Academic Program Coordinator position at Seven Tepees. I am a first-generation Hmong American college graduate who is seeking opportunities to serve my community and ally minorities. Being a young scholar who struggled immensely from social inequality, I have developed a burning passion to uplift young people of color by assisting with access and retention in academia. Thus, I am pursuing a career in counseling so that I will have the credibility and power to assist youth in academics, social skills, and cultural awareness.

I am interested in working with Seven Tepees Youth Program because I believe that our values and goals are aligned. For instance, we believe that youth needs to be mentor and nurture so that they can make positive life decisions that uplift their communities as they thrive. We believe that understanding diversity and culture are essential to one’s success, especially in education. With that, I believe that my experience will be

As a leader, I codeveloped an after school academic team that mentored students in mathematics, language arts, and science. My role consisted of outreaching to teachers who taught college readiness courses and asking for their assistance to develop study materials. I challenged the students to improve in the subject that they struggled the most by having an improvement reward system. For instance, if a student demonstrated a five percent improvement he or she will receive a five dollar coupon to the student store. I believed that a reward system was beneficial in a high school curriculum because it established a culture of perseverance as the key of success. Because my experience with the academic team has been positive and life changing, the passion to serve others, especially with youth and their endeavors, became my purpose in

Dear DePaul Department of Housing Services, I am looking to apply to the Facilities Assistant Position. I have worked with Housing Services before as a Residential Advisor and through that position, I was able to learn about the various duties of Facilities Assistants. I also heard about the opening position through a previous facilities assistant, Jacky Villagomez. I am interested in this position because I have already experienced what it’s like to work with the residents of DePaul’s student housing, but I have yet to experience the challenges Facilities Assistants face day to day responding to different facility needs. This position will allow me to face different challenges and will allow me to contribute to the larger DePaul student community.…

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

Furthermore, I would implement all of my acquired knowledge to a diverse community in the form of efficient health care. I firmly believe that, in order to provide exceptional health care services to patients, a physician must be culturally competent and capable…

I want to be in the Leader's In Training program because Camp Mendocino is teaching youth how to live a healthy life at a young age. This camp helps the upcoming youth live in reality instead of the virtual world and ties into my overall life goal of helping Americans understand what it means to live a healthy life physically and mentally. From the negative experience I’ve had with depression I don't want any child or teen feel like they are unworthy of the life they are living. By working with Camp Mendocino I will be helping the youth understand how to have a healthy state of mind by encouraging campers to deal with negative feelings…

While living in New York, I volunteered for DREAM, an organization based in Harlem that provides after-school programs to area students. For two-and-a-half years, I spent two hours per week working with local children on their math, reading, and writing skills. While there, I developed an especially strong relationship with a student named Gio. When I first met him, Gio lacked confidence in his own abilities. Though he also needed to work on his academics, I knew that increasing his self-confidence would do wonders for his school work.…

Success does not begin with an idea, it begins with the unity of the right individuals; those individuals being willing and capable communicators. But after Mrs. Carscallen presented our group requirements --those requirements including a minimum of three to four members in each group-- we decided to join forces. With an understanding that competitiveness, egos, and previous tension between members would have to be set aside,…

As I began this class in January my definition of curriculum was based on the academic coursework teachers use to instruct the information. Now my definition of curriculum is anything that falls under the auspice of the school that includes coursework, classroom arrangement, instruction, assessment, student engagement, and community involvement. My perspective is curriculum is what students learn in and out of the school. We need to teach students to become learners and problem solvers for the 21st century.
