“The truly scary thing about undiscovered lies is that they have a greater capacity to diminish us than exposed ones. They erode our strength, our self-esteem, our very foundation.” (Cheryl Hughes). Academic Integrity is important to have during an education career because taking the easy way out has its’ consequences.
Doing your own work and giving credit to others for their work is the bases of academic integrity. “When an individual is ego involved, the goal is to maximize the establishment and demonstration of high ability and to avoid the demonstration of low ability.” (Nicholls 1984). From this evidence it is easier to visualize why to do your own work because of the feeling of accomplishment. Competing in history fair in High School isn’t fun at all and is very easy to do only half the work yourself and the other half to plagiarize other’s work, but I decided to put full effort in it and in result received 2nd place. Accomplishing and achieving 2nd place felt great inside and made me feel like it wasn’t just a waste

“About 75 percent of college students admit to cheating, suggesting that probably even more than three quarters of college students have done something against the rules to improve their grades.” (Buchmann, Cheating in College). Even this percentage probably isn’t accurate because of the fact that lots of people won’t admit or even believe that they are cheating. A good friend of mine regularly cheated in our Physics class and I knew about it, but never said anything because we were too close. He regularly got A’s on test and would brag about to but whenever it was brought up that he cheated he would completely deny it. Because he regularly cheated it wasn’t an accurate representation of his academic success but was a good representation of his character morally and personality

Studies show that regardless of whether college students have a high or low GPA that 75% are still going to cheat at some point in their college career (qtd Lang). Nationwide there have been two scientific studies on the amount of kids that cheat. The study tells us that cheating has not changed in the last 30 years (qtd Lang). There is clearly a problem with the academic policies and ideals that universities have. In Stephanie Ericson’s “The Ways We Lie,” Ericson discusses a contemporary issue of how we as humans justify lying to big institutions for our self-benefit. An ever-growing branch of this form of lying includes academic dishonesty. In today’s society, schools praise GPA and grades rather than student progress, prompting students to feel the external pressure of meeting these expectations. Rather than appraising students based on growth, schools admire the top students, unknowingly encouraging them to cheat for the top grades instead of learning for their own improvement. The education system has become extremely competitive, and a grade-oriented environment is associated with these increased levels of cheating.…

Society has drastically changed within the past century. Years ago, not having a college degree did not limit individuals as much as in today’s generation. Without a degree, jobs were still accessible and employers did not single out those without a college education. In today’s world, it is nearly impossible to get a job without a college diploma. Parents, peers, teachers, and employers alike stress the necessity of having a college degree.…

Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. We are told that the grade lies in our hands, but really it's not. It lies in the teachers because if they don’t teach we don’t learn; and if we don’t learn then that grade is something that will burn a hole through our report card. But when we lie that we are learning we have to work harder to understand something that we actually don’t. But why do we lie?…

Quotation marks, and remembering the references at the bottom. have been an issue for me. It is carelessness on my part, but will have consequences as if I done it on purpose. I have learned in my attend video that the limit on how much you can quote is less than 15%, and to use paraphrasing, which will always be in your words (Bethel University, 2015) I realize how important this is, not only in school but also in life.…

There are numerous reasons why students cheat. In the article Instructing Students in Academic Integrity, according to the authors, “ Cheating tends to be justified when students feel that the material that they are learning is not relevant to educational and personal goals”( Craig, Federici, and Buehler 50). When students don’t feel like an assignment is necessary, then they will simply ask to copy another student's work just to get it done and get the assignment points. This is a very popular trend, especially in a course that doesn’t matter or interests the student. When asking people around campus, the cut throat environment of college and getting into graduate school is the main reason students…

Cheating and plagiarizing hurts the student more than it helps, but with a lack of interest and desire to do well, the student may disregard that possibility. Some students may do even better in an environment where cheating is less common because of an honor code, as represented in Alyssa Vangelli’s article. It makes sense that she has criticisms about a new honor code because not everyone will agree, but once it gets revised and makes students want to prevent cheating, students will end up doing better in school. A less excessive amount of writing a code and consequences and more focused on increasing the moral values of maintaining integrity will aid the success rate of students. Additionally, an increased moral value against cheating and a belief in themselves, students will be more encouraged to reduce the amount of cheating that occurs in school.…

However, the pressure to succeed in a classroom setting has become so intense that some students have begun cheating for a variety of reasons. Although I have never cheated myself, I can honestly see the appeal in taking shortcuts when deadlines pile up with no end in sight. Critics of those who cheat can easily point at a cheating student and discuss how poor of a student they are, but the critics never stop to consider the amount of pressure a student truly is under. Cheating has always been considered a terrible act that shows poor character, however, what acts are considered cheating and are not are often fuzzy to students.…

The full definition of academic integrity is two part because it is two words. The first, academic is “a member of an institution of learning”. While the second, integrity means “firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values”. (Miriam webster).
