Therefore, it is necessary for an honor code to be implemented in order to cultivate integrity, because not only does it provide an atmosphere where students do not have to fear from their peers cheating off of them, it also statistically lowers the percentage of untruthfulness amongst schools. In Stephanie Ericson’s “The Ways We Lie,” Ericson discusses a contemporary issue of how we as humans justify lying to big institutions for our self-benefit. An ever-growing branch of this form of lying includes academic dishonesty. In today’s society, schools praise GPA and grades rather than student progress, prompting students to feel the external pressure of meeting these expectations. Rather than appraising students based on growth, schools admire the top students, unknowingly encouraging them to cheat for the top grades instead of learning for their own improvement. The education system has become extremely competitive, and a grade-oriented environment is associated with these increased levels of cheating.…

Integrity is a personal choice to consistently honor and uphold values and principles and can be exemplified by some simple concepts such as: do the right thing for the right reason, be honest to yourself and the art, consistency in choices and actions, and acceptance of views and needs beyond your own. Integrity is a foundational tenet on which the others are built – I expect it is for this reason it is listed first in the list of tenets. Integrity is most directly embodied in my personal life as a role model for my daughter. I can’t make excuses or miss class because I’m too tired after work. I can’t give up because I think something is too hard or complicated.…

For example, the University of Virginia expects students to write an honor statement “on every test in every class” to never “lie, cheat, or steal”, which is a component of its “well defined and policed” honor codes. However, plagiarism persists to be a complication where peers investigated “157 students...in the largest cheating scandal in memory.” (Source D). Even with the ominous honor protocols in position, this university could not alleviate this issue that countless students swore in their honor statement. The scandal straightforwardly exhibits that non-integral acts will cultivate despite the rigorous honor codes since these protocols, such as the statement, solely remind students to not perform illicit actions while failing to actually distill a lasting impact on students.…

Academic integrity at HBU means to be real with oneself because it eventually creates our moral character for our professions as we follow up in our conduct. We follow these rules by being committed to our own knowledge and not your colleagues, having a great attitude about your university and its environment, being respectful to the staff members and classmates greatly impacts our HBU community. I have followed these policies due to the fact of not copying any of my work, no plagriasm, and having a great mentality about HBU. Copying someone’s work has never crossed my mind while doing an assiggment because it’s just going to affect me and it will set me behind in a class. Cheating and plagiarizing hurts the student more than it helps, but with a lack of interest and desire to do well, the student may disregard that possibility. Some students may do even better in an environment where cheating is less common because of an honor code, as represented in Alyssa Vangelli’s article. It makes sense that she has criticisms about a new honor code because not everyone will agree, but once it gets revised and makes students want to prevent cheating, students will end up doing better in school. A less excessive amount of writing a code and consequences and more focused on increasing the moral values of maintaining integrity will aid the success rate of students. Additionally, an increased moral value against cheating and a belief in themselves, students will be more encouraged to reduce the amount of cheating that occurs in school.…
