Academic Integrity Academic integrity is important because it adversities your attributes and morals, whether good or bad. Character can affect how others perceive you. The type of job a person can get depends on their moral worthiness. A person’s character is difficult to build and not having integrity will affect their credibility. If someone is willing to cheat, steal, or plagiarize someone else’s work it questions that person’s honor and reputation. What other rules would they be willing to break? If a person cannot be ethical enough to stop him or herself from intentionally stealing someone else’s work and ideas, how can they be trusted professionally? For the sake of profits, managers and stockholders need to know that they have trustworthy people that work for the business.
I do not believe a person can claim ignorance on plagiarism. Multiple college textbooks and college manuals explain plagiarism. The sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association had an entire chapter dedicated on how to appropriately cite another person’s work (APA, 2010) The Publication Manual stated that “Authors do not present the work of another as if it were their own work” (p.16). However, each culture has its own sets of values, which are weighted differently. It may be culturally acceptable to steal food if a person is from a poor country.
