Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Academic Foundations

As I entered the University of Southern Florida and enrolled in my first college classes, I had no idea what “Academic Foundations” meant. I thought that it was going to be a class about how to write papers, take tests, and use a computer. So naturally, I wasn’t too thrilled. The term “academic” doesn’t normally scream fun. I originally thought that I was going to learn a bunch of stuff that I already knew and didn’t need help with. However, I am happy to say that I couldn’t have been more wrong. Academic Foundations actually turned out to be an extremely helpful and interesting class. In fact, I would probably recommend the class to all USF freshmen. I think that the most unexpected thing that I learned was all of the different ways to achieve a nursing degree. There are very many different paths one can take to become a nurse. I think that this is very comforting and important to understand. The most valuable thing I learned was about setting reasonable goals. All too often I set unrealistic goals and give up on them. However, I learned that instead of setting big, impossible goals, I should set small and reasonable goals. I think that this will benefit me in my future. Academic Foundations helped me realize that college isn’t impossible and that becoming a nurse is achievable. I felt as if nursing would be something that I wouldn’t be able to accomplish. However I am glad to say that this is not so. In fact, I believe that I will be able to achieve my dream of becoming a nurse. I think the most important thing to keep in mind while pursuing a nursing degree is that you should not overthink things. As long as you put your best effort into your schoolwork and stay driven, anything is
