Academic Discovery Paper Choosing a academic and career goal is one that took me roughly 19 years. Coming into college I was undecided, but knew I wanted to do something within the health-science realm. I decided to pursue a major in Kinesiology and go to graduate school to obtain a masters in orthotics and prosthetics. Interviewing my professor, and this class has really helped me reinsure I am pursuing a career suitable for me. During the interview with Dr. Schmidt, he really helped me secure what I want to do. When brought up a conversation about key issues in the field, a lot of the topics he brought up reflected issues that I was interested in fixing. Yes we learn ways to help ourselves, but we dedicate our time helping others physically and mentally. Dr. Schmidt says a person should only go into this major if they feel the need and desire to make a difference is somebody’s life in a positive way. Though the job title may just be personal trainer, they really are a trainer, counselor, doctor, friend, supporter, and sometimes a lifesaver. There is going to be a wide variety of people who come to the professional that they are going to have to be able to handle every situation. Having a liberal education can really help someone with the discrepancies they will face. Understanding what a person believes and has gone through is crucial to the field will help them out tremendously with their clients. For example, if someone refuses to help an obese person because they slack off on their plan too much does not understand what it is like to be apart of that population or will not work with someone of a differently religion because their beliefs do not match up. In Cronon’s article “Only Connect…” there are many issues he brings up about communication and two that really stick out to me and this major is “practice humility, tolerance, and self criticism” and “solve a wide variety of puzzles and problems” (Cronon, 3). Everybody has different beliefs and it is not a matter of who is right or wrong but what they can learn from each other and come together with something they both can relate too, after all we are all just humans. Not only do people have different beliefs, they also have different problems. No two people are going to be exactly alike so as a professional, you are going to have to be able to problem solve and accept that there are going to be situations where a solution will work for one person and different for
