Academic Advising Self Analysis

Decent Essays
It was interesting to see how departments and positions at Bethune-Cookman University were broken down. After going over the different departments, I would mostly be interested in positions under the Student Affairs or Student Services. I am currently working at NU as an Admissions Advisor, but I also do Academic Advising. I have realized that Academic Advising is my true passion. I enjoy guiding and advising students towards their goal of completing their degree and pursuing a career. While I am working on my Master’s program, I want to continue growing at NU and eventually move on to work at a Community College or State University.
I want to use my knowledge and experience to help underrepresented and low-income students pursue an education.

Ever since being a part of this lab, I have had much of a learning experience. My research focused on genetically fine mapping a specific region of a gene in pearl millet plants that translates into bristle production. This required me to plant and maintain F2 seedlings and screen them for recombination. I would not have known how meticulous every task in an experimental procedure must be before I started working in this lab. Having this role has taught me persistence even with issues with results.…

All too often I hear about what is happening on my tribal grounds back home in Oklahoma and it deeply saddens me. The quality of life on many reservations has been declining for years, and judging from just this past year alone, I can tell it will only worsen. My intended plans had always been to become a professor. Once I have obtained my doctorate, I feel I am more enabled to have a voice on the matter than I would have had previously. I intend to set up more scholarships for Native American students on reservations, and I would love to be able to help build more obtainable and sustainable housing and schools.…

I don’t want to dwell on this but build myself up around areas I am strong (Bethel, 2014).…
