In the novel Animal Farm, by George Orwell, the pigs on the farm have complete rule over all other animals. The combination of the ignorance of the animals and the manipulation of language allows the pigs to take the animal’s freedom away. The abuse of language is essential to the totalitarian government established by the pigs. This is shown when Squealer modifies the 7 Commandments (Orwell 123). This is just a way to justify the pigs’ treacherous actions. By changing the 7 Commandments, the animals cannot defy the pigs without defying the principles of the Rebellion and it provides the pigs with an unopposed rule.
